Add Simple POP3 Mail Client to Firefox - Email Notifier

Accessing POP Email Directly Within Firefox

For users who prefer to manage their entire digital experience within the Firefox browser, direct access to POP email accounts can be highly beneficial. The Simple Mail extension provides this capability, and as its name suggests, it’s designed for ease of use.

Installation and Account Setup

Following installation, a small mail icon will appear in the Firefox status bar. This icon will visually indicate unread messages with a highlight and a numerical count. To begin, right-click the icon and select 'Preferences' to configure your email account.

Within the preferences, you can either add a new account manually or import settings from Thunderbird – although this import feature was not tested during evaluation.

Using the Simple Mail Client

Clicking the mail icon opens the client interface, presenting a straightforward two-paned view of messages residing on your email server. Individual messages can be deleted directly from the right-click context menu.

Composing New Emails

Selecting the 'New' or 'Reply' options will launch a simple email composition dialog. This interface maintains the extension’s overall focus on simplicity.

Overall Assessment

Thoughts: While functional, this extension is best suited as a POP mail notifier rather than a full-fledged email client. The interface lacks the features needed for extensive email management.

Several alternative solutions offer more robust functionality:

  • Forward your POP email to Gmail for centralized access.
  • Consider Google Apps for your Domain to utilize Gmail with a custom email address.
  • Utilize Gmail’s 'Settings\Accounts' tab to integrate a POP email account for automatic checking.

These options can be further enhanced by using the Gmail Manager extension for Firefox. You can download the Simple Mail Extension directly from Mozilla Add-ons.
