Add External Hard Drive to Windows Home Server - Setup Guide

Expanding Storage on Your Windows Home Server
There are times when augmenting the storage capacity of your Windows Home Server becomes necessary. This guide details the process of integrating an external hard drive to enhance your server’s available space.
Adding the External Drive
Begin by physically connecting the external hard drive to the server unit. Subsequently, launch the Windows Home Server Console from a computer on the same network. Navigate to the Server Storage section.
The newly connected drive should appear within the list of available storage devices. In this instance, it’s identified as a Western Digital 1TB My Book. Initially, the drive’s status will be indicated as ‘Not Added.’
To incorporate the drive into your server’s storage pool, right-click on its entry and select the ‘Add’ option.
This action initiates the Add a Hard Drive Wizard, guiding you through the configuration process.
On the subsequent screen of the wizard, choose the option to ‘Add this hard drive to your server storage’ to increase the overall storage capacity. Alternatively, selecting the second option would configure the drive for server backups.
A warning message will appear, informing you that the drive will be formatted, resulting in the loss of all existing data. Confirm this by clicking ‘Finish’ to proceed with the formatting and integration.
Allow a short period for the drive to be formatted and prepared for use with the server.
Once completed, the external drive will be successfully integrated into your server’s storage system.
Verification and Benefits
You will now observe the drive listed with a ‘Healthy’ status. The server storage capacity indicator will also reflect the increased available space.
This expansion provides additional room for storing a greater volume of movies, music, videos, and other crucial data files.
For those requiring more storage, adding an external drive can be a more straightforward solution than installing an internal drive, depending on your server hardware.
Initial testing has not revealed any noticeable latency issues when accessing files stored on the external drive. Future articles will explore the process of adding an internal drive and a performance comparison between the two methods.
