Ad Practitioners Acquires Knoq - Expanding Door-to-Door Marketing Online

Knoq's Transition from Door-to-Door to Digital Marketing

Initially known as Polis, Knoq was a startup that utilized a field representative model, deploying individuals to engage with potential customers directly at their homes to promote client offerings. Consequently, the onset of 2020 presented significant operational hurdles for the company.

Founder and CEO Kendall Tucker explained to me that door-to-door canvassing was halted in February, prompting a strategic reassessment of the company’s future direction throughout the summer months.

Pivoting and Leveraging Existing Assets

The company had previously adapted its focus, moving away from political campaigns towards commercial marketing initiatives. However, Tucker emphasized that Knoq possessed valuable resources, specifically its “extensive and unique consumer models” capable of predicting product interest, alongside “the expertise in developing and managing these neighborhood representative teams.”

Following a competitive acquisition process, Knoq was acquired by Ad Practitioners, a digital media organization with a portfolio including Money.com and ConsumersAdvocate.org.

As integrated within Ad Practitioners, Knoq’s network of representatives – referred to as “Knoqers” – will now engage with visitors to the aforementioned websites, assisting in “connecting consumers with suitable products,” such as auto insurance or software solutions. Tucker highlighted that many consumers already initiate contact through chatbots and phone support, stating, “We are simply bridging the gap and facilitating connections.”

In the official acquisition announcement, Ad Practitioners CEO Greg Powel articulated a similar vision, emphasizing a “common goal of empowering individuals to make informed decisions through data-driven, conversational interactions, while providing education about relevant products and services.”

Powel further stated, “The Money and ConsumersAdvocate.org brands already enjoy the trust of millions of active users.” He envisions a future where consumers utilize their platforms for both informative content and reviews, as well as direct consultations with representatives who can provide personalized guidance.

Relocation and Team Dynamics

The leadership team of Knoq has already transitioned to Ad Practitioners’ location in Puerto Rico, with plans for the remaining Knoq team members to relocate later this year.

Despite the challenges presented by the pandemic, Tucker expressed a strong belief in the importance of in-person team collaboration. She noted that the Knoq team held socially distanced outdoor gatherings during the summer, “for brainstorming sessions or simply to maintain team morale and well-being.” Additionally, she is enthusiastic about the opportunity to recruit talent from Puerto Rico.

Financial Details and Investor Perspective

The financial specifics of the acquisition have not been publicly disclosed. Knoq had previously secured $2.5 million in funding from Initialized Capital and Haystack.vc. Tucker underscored the importance of ensuring a positive outcome not only for her team and herself but also for the company’s investors.

Initialized General Partner Alda Leu Dennis commented, “We are thrilled for Kendall and her team on their successful exit to Ad Practitioners.” She added, “It has been a pleasure collaborating with Knoq over the past several years. The Knoq team will introduce a technologically advanced approach to sales outreach and customer analytics, and Kendall’s exceptional skills as a builder, operator, and strategist will be invaluable to Ad Practitioners.”
