Inspiration4 Mission to be Documented by Netflix
A documentary series focusing on the Inspiration4 mission is forthcoming. Netflix announced on Tuesday the production of a five-part series detailing the event. This marks Netflix’s inaugural documentary to chronicle an occurrence with such immediacy, unfolding in five installments throughout September.
Following the All-Civilian Crew
“Countdown: Inspiration4 Mission to Space” will chart the journey of the pioneering all-civilian Inspiration4 crew. The series will showcase their preparations and experiences during a three-day orbital flight. The privately funded endeavor is spearheaded by Jared Isaacman, CEO and founder of Shift4 Payments, a payment processing company.
The Crew Members
Isaacman will be accompanied by a diverse team. This includes Hayley Arceneaux, a physician assistant at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and a survivor of pediatric bone cancer. Also joining are Christopher Sembroski, an engineer at Lockheed Martin and a veteran of the Air Force, and Sian Proctor, a professor specializing in geoscience.
Philanthropic Commitment
Isaacman has pledged a substantial $100 million donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital from his personal funds. This is in addition to a public fundraising campaign. The campaign was instrumental in determining the selection of Sian Proctor’s seat and, as of March, had generated an extra $13 million for the hospital.
SpaceX Technology Utilized
The crew will journey to orbit aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft, launched by a Falcon 9 rocket. SpaceX is customizing the Dragon capsule specifically for this mission. A docking port has been replaced with a panoramic glass dome.
Unique Viewing Experience
This dome will allow crew members to enjoy breathtaking views of Earth and space. The dome is designed to accommodate only one passenger at a time. It will only be activated once the spacecraft has reached the safety of space. The prioritization of spectacular views reflects the growth of the space tourism sector.
Documentary Leadership
The Netflix series is expected to amplify the impact of the already significant media attention surrounding Inspiration4. Jason Hehir, the director of the acclaimed ESPN documentary miniseries “The Last Dance” about Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls, will helm the project.
