5 Best Sites to Help Students Prepare for the SATs

Supporting Students: Free SAT Preparation Resources
Over the years, I’ve assisted numerous students in their SAT preparation. Many benefited from tutoring despite financial constraints, while others sought independent study materials.
Annually, a significant number of students aspiring to attend college encounter a landscape of costly SAT resources, with limited free alternatives. Parents often seek affordable support, only to face substantial expenses for study materials.
Driven by the conviction that equal opportunity should be accessible to all, I’ve compiled a list of websites offering free SAT preparation. Begin your studies today…
Math TV
Math TV provides a comprehensive collection of tutorial videos covering mathematical concepts from fundamental arithmetic to Calculus. Lessons are concise, typically lasting between five and ten minutes, and are presented with clarity.
The instructional style closely resembles a classroom setting, utilizing a whiteboard to illustrate problem-solving techniques. Furthermore, the site offers free access to several online textbooks related to the studied subjects.
However, it lacks the interactive element of being able to ask questions directly.
Major Tests
Major Tests stands out as one of the most user-friendly test preparation websites available, boasting intuitive navigation. It features an extensive library of practice tests for the SAT, GRE, and GMAT, alongside a vocabulary list containing over 1500 words.
Tests are segmented for focused practice, and immediate grading with detailed explanations for incorrect answers facilitates progress tracking and targeted improvement.
Purple Math
Purple Math serves as an excellent resource for tutorials across a wide range of SAT-relevant topics. The explanations are insightful, the exercises provide valuable practice, and the step-by-step approach simplifies complex concepts.
Tutorials encompass subjects from decimals and fractions to trigonometry. Accessing lessons is most easily achieved through the "Lessons Index" in the right-hand menu.
For offline study, lessons can be downloaded, or a CD containing the same material is available for purchase at a reasonable price of $10 to $18.
VocabTest
VocabTest offers a series of English tests tailored to various skill levels, providing effective practice for students. Levels are categorized by grade, ranging from Middle School to AP Senior.
Upon completing a test, users receive immediate feedback on their performance, along with explanations of the vocabulary used and a comparison of their average score to other students. This is a valuable tool for vocabulary enhancement.
Math.com
Math.com presents explanations for numerous mathematical topics, making it a useful resource for reviewing concepts and resolving specific problem areas. While the site’s design is somewhat cluttered with advertisements and navigation can be challenging, the content is well-written.
The tutorials are not exhaustive but offer a quick refresher on familiar material, serving as a good general review resource.
Now equipped with these resources, there are no barriers to success. Dedication and a willingness to learn are all that’s needed to achieve a strong SAT score.
