Become A Better Photographer with Online 365 Days Groups

Revitalize Your Photography with Flickr Group Projects

Has your camera been neglected recently? Consider a New Year's resolution focused on photographic improvement. Participating in one of Flickr’s numerous photo group projects could be an excellent way to achieve this.

The 365-Day Photo Challenge

Among the most demanding, yet potentially fulfilling, options is the commitment to submit a photograph each day for a full year. Several 365 days groups are available on Flickr.com.

We recommend exploring multiple groups to find one that suits your needs and preferences, establishing it as your primary online photography community.

Project 365: A Popular Choice

Currently, the most well-known group dedicated to this undertaking is simply named Project 365. It boasts a substantial membership of 19,920 photographers.

The group features a wealth of discussion forums, including regularly updated weekly challenges designed to help members consistently meet their daily photographic goals.

You are welcome to join Project 365 at any point to begin your photographic journey.

Starting Fresh with a New Edition

For those wishing to commence on January 1st, a dedicated group, “365: the 2011 edition,” was established specifically for this purpose.

The group’s administrator has implemented a membership cap of 1,111 members. Existing Flickr.com users are encouraged to join promptly if interested.

All photographers, regardless of their experience level, are invited to participate.

Exploring the 365 Community

365 Community represents another established group, currently comprised of 644 members.

Like Project 365, this community also utilizes weekly themes to inspire creativity.

Furthermore, milestone threads are available to celebrate members’ achievements as they progress through the year-long project.

These threads provide encouragement and a sense of accomplishment.

Successfully Finishing a 365 Photo Project

Undertaking a daily photo challenge, posting one image each day, can present significant hurdles, particularly for those with demanding schedules. The following suggestions, drawn from personal experience completing such a project several years ago, may prove beneficial.

  • Always have a camera readily accessible, regardless of your location. While a professional DSLR is valuable, a more compact or pocket-sized camera is often more practical. I utilized both a Canon 50D and a Canon G9 for this purpose. Even a smartphone with a capable camera can be useful.

  • Compile a list of potential subjects and locations. Maintain a record of subjects within your community that you've been wanting to photograph. Consider frequently visited locations as recurring shooting opportunities. For instance, a substantial portion of my project’s images originated from Old Sacramento, a local historical landmark.
  • Avoid self-censorship during the shooting process. It’s natural to strive for high-quality images, but refrain from limiting yourself when capturing photos digitally. Even seemingly mundane subjects warrant a shot; you can always decide later whether to publish them. Capture multiple images daily and select the strongest.

  • Draw inspiration from the work of other photographers. Subjects and photographic concepts are not subject to copyright. Many photographers will appreciate being cited as an influence.
  • Diversify your photographic subjects. Dedicate a week or more to macro photography, for example. During vacations, focus on nighttime photography. Weekends could be reserved for nature photography.
  • Streamline your photo posting process on platforms like Flickr. Explore software or plugins designed to expedite photo uploading and tagging. Apple’s iPhoto, for instance, allows seamless import, editing, and posting to Flickr without leaving the application.

  • Utilize the project as a learning opportunity for your camera and photo editing software.
  • Actively engage in giving and receiving feedback on your photographs. Select several fellow Project 365 participants to support and encourage throughout the year. In return, you will benefit from their insights and motivation. The Flock web browser is a useful tool for staying connected with contacts on Flickr.com.
  • Experiment with different photographic techniques. Beyond mastering your camera, this project provides an excellent platform to explore various techniques, including alternative shooting angles, lens sizes, aperture settings, and lighting approaches.
  • Acknowledge your accomplishment. Upon completion, consider compiling your photos into a book. The Blurb published book by the 365 Community group serves as a source of inspiration.

Consistently capturing a photo each day is a remarkably effective method for improving your photographic skills. Expect to create images you deem unsatisfactory at times, but rest assured, you will also produce exceptional photographs that might not have materialized without this dedicated practice.

Please share if you are planning to embark on Project 365. If a daily photo feels too demanding, a list of alternative Flickr.com photo projects will be provided.
