Escape Cloud Storage: 3 Alternatives for Privacy

Reclaiming Control: Moving Away From Cloud Dependence

A significant number of prominent IT corporations appear to believe that consolidating computing processes within large, remote data centers represents a viable solution for numerous critical needs.

Over the past several years, Google has gradually introduced us to cloud-based services, encompassing documents, data storage, email, and its entire suite of offerings.

The Rise of Cloud Services

Apple is rapidly gaining ground with the introduction of iCloud, and Dropbox has become widely adopted for straightforward file exchange.

However, a valid question arises: what if you prefer not to store all your data on servers managed by third parties?

What if maintaining local access, physical control, and complete ownership of your information is a priority?

Achieving Cloud Functionality Locally

It is entirely possible to move away from reliance on the cloud without sacrificing the convenience and features you've come to expect.

We will explore methods to replicate cloud functionality within your own environment.

This allows you to retain complete control over your data and infrastructure.

The following steps will demonstrate how to achieve this transition.

Cloud Backup

The cloud has become a vital component of backup strategies for numerous users, functioning as their sole backup method for some. While maintaining off-site backups is crucial, diverse approaches exist to achieve this.

An alternative to traditional cloud services is the CrashPlan application. It enables users to contribute unused hard drive space to back up their own devices or even those of friends. Through collaboration, individuals can effectively create a personalized cloud backup system.

Several excellent solutions are available for local backups. A comprehensive overview of options can be found within the backup archive on MakeUseOf. Here are some personally recommended methods:

  • Apple Time Capsule provides a similar functionality for Mac computers. A Time Machine drive was also configured on a home server to mimic a Time Capsule, though recent OSX updates have limited the effectiveness of these customizations.
  • FreeNAS and Amahi are cost-free, Linux-based platforms that can transform a spare computer into a comprehensive server, offering network storage and backup capabilities.
  • Employing two external hard drives is a practical solution. Dedicate one drive for daily full backups, and store the other in a separate location. Rotate the drives weekly to guarantee an offsite backup that is, at most, one week old.

Remote File Accessibility

Accessing your files remotely doesn't necessarily require a service like DropBox; the optimal solution is determined by your specific needs and intended usage.

Windows Live Mesh provides a means of synchronizing files across multiple computers, and it doesn't mandate storage within their online cloud service if synchronization between devices is the sole objective. This approach closely mimics the functionality of DropBox, but relies on both computers being powered on and operational during synchronization to ensure the most current file versions are available.

For scenarios involving minor file modifications while traveling, a remote control solution might be more suitable. Windows, for example, incorporates Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) for built-in remote control functionality. Numerous free applications exist across various platforms, enabling access to your computer via its IP address.

LogMeIn, a subscription-based service, simplifies remote access and facilitates file transfers to mobile devices. A complimentary version is available, but it restricts functionality to remote access only, excluding file transfer capabilities.

Previously, a compilation of iPad remote access applications was reviewed, with SplashTop consistently being the preferred cross-platform choice due to its exceptional speed. Performance is so efficient that even gaming is possible. Parallels users benefit from complimentary mobile applications for accessing their virtual machines remotely. TeamViewer is also a robust, free, cross-platform remote desktop application, though it is primarily geared towards technical assistance.

Another option involves establishing your own FTP server at home. With appropriate port forwarding and router configuration, you can access your home network from any location globally, utilizing the universally supported FTP protocol.

Enjoying Music and Movies Through Streaming

The necessity of storing media in cloud-based systems and incurring substantial costs for this service has always been questionable, especially considering the abundance of complimentary options available for streaming media directly from your personal computer via the internet.

Plex Media Server is my preferred application, facilitating straightforward and secure media streaming, alongside transcoding capabilities for both Mac and mobile platforms. While the mobile application requires a purchase, versions are accessible for both iOS and Android operating systems.

As previously highlighted, Amahi Home Server simplifies streaming through a diverse selection of free Linux applications. These applications are broadly compatible with any Linux distribution, but Amahi distinguishes itself by seamlessly integrating them with its extensive features and user-friendly app store installation process.

Prior to adopting Plex, Air Video served as my primary streaming video application for iPad and iPhone. However, it comes with a price tag and lacks client availability beyond PC/Mac to iOS compatibility.

An exploration for comparable free alternatives for Android proved challenging. The most promising solution discovered was ultimately discontinued, with its developers transitioning to Plex due to its superior ease of use. If you are aware of any worthwhile Android options, please share your recommendations in the comments section.

Are there any other indispensable cloud services that you rely upon? Feel free to inform us if you believe we have overlooked any essential services, and we will gladly explore potential alternatives. I remain keenly anticipating the release of iCloud, albeit for distinct reasons. Generally, I intend to maintain local backups and store my movies on my home server, actively avoiding cloud services. You may find this approach beneficial as well.

  • Plex Media Server: A versatile solution for streaming and transcoding.
  • Amahi Home Server: Offers easy streaming with free Linux apps.
  • Air Video: A paid option for PC/Mac to iOS streaming.
