3 Best LogMeIn Alternatives for Ubuntu

Remote Access Solutions for Ubuntu

For users of Ubuntu, LogMeIn presents a viable solution for remote access and desktop control. However, its functionality isn't always fully realized within the Ubuntu environment, or other Linux distributions. A Linux plug-in for LogMeIn exists, but remains in pre-release status with no clear timeline for a full launch.

Given the occasional need for remote computer access, what alternatives are available to Linux users? Several options provide robust functionality.

TeamViewer

TeamViewer stands out as a leading remote access application, particularly well-regarded on Windows. Fortunately, Linux support is now also provided. While currently in beta, TeamViewer for Linux performs admirably, exceeding the experience of running it under Wine and replicating the familiar features of the Windows version.

Installation of TeamViewer is straightforward. Simply download the appropriate package for your distribution and execute it to begin the installation process. Packages are currently available for Ubuntu, Fedora, Suse, and Mandriva. Alternatively, a tarball can be downloaded for manual compilation and installation.

Upon launching TeamViewer, a brief initialization period is required. Once complete, the user interface displays a unique ID and a password. These credentials are necessary for establishing a remote connection to the computer. The computer’s ID remains constant, while the password is dynamically generated with each session. A persistent, user-defined password can also be configured for continuous remote access.

Further capabilities include:

  • Session recording functionality.
  • Adjustable screen quality for optimized performance or visual clarity.
  • The ability to create blacklists and whitelists for controlling user access.
  • Granular control over the actions remote users can perform.

TeamViewer also facilitates easy file transfer between connected computers and supports Voice over IP (VOIP) communication if needed.

VNC

Another option involves utilizing remote desktop access via VNC. While lacking the extensive feature set of TeamViewer or LogMeIn, VNC is readily available on Ubuntu systems. Connecting to a computer via VNC requires only the IP address and, optionally, a password.

To enable remote desktop connections in Ubuntu, navigate to System > Preferences > Remote Desktop and check the box labeled "Allow other users to view your desktop". A password can also be set for added security during remote access.

Numerous client applications are available for connecting to a VNC server. Further information can be found here.

Free NX

Remote access can also be achieved through NX. This requires a FreeNX server installed on the target computer. The freenx-team ppa can be used to install FreeNX on your system. Setup can be somewhat more complex on older Ubuntu versions. Detailed, step-by-step instructions for various Ubuntu releases are available on this Ubuntu Help page.

NX clients are available for Windows, Linux, Mac, and Solaris, enabling connections to a computer running an NX server. The appropriate client can be downloaded here.

While LogMeIn offers a comprehensive suite of remote access and utility features, the alternatives discussed above provide comparable functionality. TeamViewer is often considered even more robust. Regardless, if remote desktop access is the primary requirement, all three options offer viable solutions. For a more feature-rich experience, TeamViewer is recommended.
