Amazing Short Films Made with Free Software

The Release of Sintel and the Power of Open-Source 3D Animation

The Blender Foundation recently unveiled its third open movie project, Sintel. This film is readily available for viewing both directly below and on the YouTube platform.

Consistent with their prior short films distributed online, the Foundation exclusively utilized open-source and freely available software in the production of Sintel.

The aim is to demonstrate the capabilities of the 3D animation software and video editor, Blender, to a broad audience, fostering both enjoyment and learning.

Exploring Blender and its Accessibility

Blender is designed to function across multiple operating systems. This cross-platform compatibility allows users to begin mastering its fundamentals immediately.

Resources such as the QuickStart guide, alongside numerous other tutorials, are accessible on the official Blender website and throughout the internet.

However, Blender isn't the sole free 3D content creation software option available to artists and enthusiasts.

Alternative Free 3D Software Options

Several other noteworthy programs offer free 3D modeling and animation capabilities. These include:

  • Google SketchUp, which excels in the creation of architectural designs and objects.
  • Wings 3D, a cross-platform, open-source 3D modeler offering versatile sculpting tools.
  • MakeHuman, another cross-platform, open-source application specifically designed for modeling human characters.
  • MeshLab, a cross-platform and open-source tool dedicated to the processing of 3D scans.

A more comprehensive list of alternatives can be found here. Nevertheless, Blender maintains significant popularity.

Consequently, a substantial number of open-source generated artistic works are created using this robust and feature-rich software suite.

Short Films

Sintel, a 12-minute short film created by the Blender Foundation, was made available online on September 30, 2010. Its production was independently financed through donations and relied exclusively on open-source software throughout its 10-month development in Amsterdam.

Several software packages were integral to the creation of Sintel, including:

  • Inkscape, a vector graphics editor offering functionality similar to Adobe Illustrator and available as open-source.
  • GIMP, a freely available alternative to Photoshop, with numerous video and text tutorials available for new users.
  • Blender, a powerful tool previously discussed in detail regarding CGI animation technology, and also utilized in video game development.
  • MyPaint, a digital painting program, alongside Krita, a sketching and painting application included within the KOffice suite; both are compatible across multiple operating systems.

Elephants Dream, as stated on the official website, holds the distinction of being the world’s first open movie. It was released by the Blender Foundation in 2006, following an 8-month production period.

While physical DVDs are no longer available for purchase, the film remains accessible for online viewing and download. You can find it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLkA0RELQ1g

Beyond these projects, Plumíferos, also known as Free Birds, represents an 80-minute Argentinean feature film. It premiered in February 2010 and was created entirely using open-source tools, specifically Blender and the Linux operating system.

Beyond Blender, other animation software exists. Prologue, released in 2004, is a short film created by Voria Studios, the developers of Synfig, a 2D animation software licensed under GNU.

Synfig is a vector-based, open-source animation package that simplifies the process of tweening – creating animation by drawing frames sequentially.

Prologue depicts two boys attempting to escape soldiers in a sewer. The narrative explores themes of sacrifice, as one boy attempts to divert a soldier’s attention to protect his friend.

My Friend Rabbit Making Pizza is a short animation created with Pencil, an open-source traditional animation software. Pencil allows users to trace raster and vector images to generate subsequent frames.
