X Blocking Signal Links: Federal Worker Communication Impacted

X Platform Blocks Links to Signal Messaging
Elon Musk’s X, previously known as Twitter, is currently preventing the sharing of links originating from Signal.me. This URL shortener is utilized by the Signal messaging application, enabling users to establish direct contact through a simplified link.
The restrictions, which affect both direct messages, publicly visible posts, and user profile pages, were initially identified by the Disruptionist blog.
Increased Signal Usage Among Federal Employees
This development coincides with actions undertaken by DOGE – the Department of Government Efficiency – targeting various federal agencies, including NASA and the Department of Education.
Consequently, many government workers are increasingly turning to Signal’s encrypted messaging capabilities to exchange information securely and report potentially problematic activities.
Federal Workforce Reductions and Agency Closures
Approximately 10,000 federal employees have been dismissed as DOGE strives to reduce federal expenditure and dismantle certain agencies, such as USAID.
Testing the Restrictions
Attempts were made by TechCrunch to share a Signal link through both a post and a direct message.
When attempting to share via a public post, an error message appeared, prompting a retry: “Something went wrong, but don’t fret — let’s give it another shot.”
Messages containing a Signal.me link were also unable to be sent, triggering a message stating: “This request looks like it might be automated. To protect our users from spam and other malicious activity, we can’t complete this action right now. Please try again later.”
Seeking Comment from X
TechCrunch has contacted X for an official statement regarding these blocking measures.
Musk’s Stance on Free Speech and Criticism
Elon Musk has publicly identified as a proponent of free speech; however, he has a history of criticizing publications and individuals who voice opposition to his decisions.
Accusations have also surfaced alleging that he has blocked accounts belonging to users who have expressed disagreement with him on the X platform.
