Matt Rogers on the Future of HVAC | Why He's Still Bullish

The Evolution of Smart Home Technology and a Return to HVAC
In 2010, Matt Rogers and Tony Fadell established Nest, initially focusing on an area seemingly distant from the interests of former Apple engineers: home climate control.
This concentrated effort ultimately pioneered a new product category – the smart thermostat – which now serves as a foundational element for numerous companies pursuing broader smart home integrations.
Interestingly, this occurs while Google appears to be diminishing its investment in Nest, discontinuing products that were once central to its strategy.
Reflections on Nest's Trajectory
“Nest isn’t fully realizing the original vision I had for it years ago,” Rogers shared with TechCrunch. “This is a common outcome when a company is sold.”
Despite the sale, Rogers’ dedication to improving HVAC systems has remained unwavering.
“My engagement with HVAC spans a considerable period – longer than most,” Rogers remarked with a smile. “The potential for enhancing efficiency, comfort, and overall quality of life is substantial.”
Advising Quilt and a Renewed Focus
Rogers’ enthusiasm and drive led him to informally advise Quilt, a startup specializing in heat pumps.
This occurred concurrently with his launch of Mill, a food waste startup, and his leadership role at Incite, an organization focused on investment, philanthropy, and activism alongside his wife.
“I was heavily involved in the initial stages of Mill,” Rogers explained.
Now, with Mill progressing well, Rogers feels he can dedicate more time to a deeper involvement with another company – specifically, Quilt.
Joining Quilt's Board
Rogers initially connected with Quilt’s co-founder and CEO, Paul Lambert, prior to the company’s seed funding round.
They maintained frequent communication over the years.
“We spoke almost weekly for several years,” Rogers stated. “Often, Paul’s co-founder, Matt, would seek my input on various aspects, from factory operations to supplier considerations. Eventually, formalizing the relationship felt appropriate.”
With Rogers now holding a board seat, Quilt is well-positioned to build upon the foundations laid by Nest.
The company has already prioritized product design and user experience, aiming to emulate the successful “Nest playbook,” as Lambert described.
Market Trends and Future Outlook
“The global climate is warming, and wealth is increasing,” Lambert observed. “As temperatures rise, the demand for cooling grows, and heat pumps provide an effective air conditioning solution.
Furthermore, as incomes rise, consumers are more likely to invest in cooling systems, making it a consistently dependable market.”
“These broader trends are undeniably accurate,” Rogers concurred. “It’s rewarding to collaborate with a team committed to advancing this field.”
Heat pumps are becoming increasingly important as the world seeks more efficient and sustainable cooling solutions.
