Waymo & Uber Launch Robotaxi Service in Atlanta - Early Access

Robotaxi Service Expands to Atlanta with Waymo and Uber

Waymo and Uber are initiating robotaxi services in Atlanta, extending access to customers who previously registered on a waitlist. This deployment precedes the broader public launch of the robotaxi program planned for this summer.

Early Access and Feedback

Customers chosen for this initial phase will receive notifications through both the Uber application and email. Participants utilizing the robotaxi option will be requested to share their experiences both during and following each ride.

To further encourage participation, riders completing their first Waymo journey will be granted $10 in Uber credits as a reward.

Following the Austin Launch

Atlanta represents the second city to implement the “Waymo on Uber” service. The collaborative offering, which connects riders with a Waymo vehicle through the Uber app, was first introduced in Austin earlier this spring.

Partnership Details

In September of the previous year, Uber and Waymo jointly announced their intention to introduce a robotaxi service in both Austin and Atlanta, initially slated for early 2025. This initiative is a result of their broadened partnership.

Under the terms of the agreement, access to Waymo’s fleet of self-driving Jaguar I-PACE vehicles is exclusively available to Uber users.

Service Area and Expansion

Similar to other cities where Waymo has launched – including Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco – the Atlanta service area will be progressively expanded.

Initially, Waymo and Uber will provide robotaxi rides within a 65-square-mile zone in Atlanta, encompassing areas such as downtown, Buckhead, and Capitol View.

Division of Responsibilities

The “Waymo on Uber” service establishes a clear division of labor regarding the operation of the driverless vehicle fleet. Uber is responsible for the logistical aspects, including vehicle charging, maintenance, and cleaning.

Uber also manages rider access to the robotaxis through its application. Meanwhile, Waymo focuses on monitoring the technology and overseeing the autonomous operations, including providing rider support.
