Waverly Labs Subtitles Bring Translation Tech to Retail

Waverly Labs Unveils Subtitles: A New Approach to Real-Time Translation
For several years, we have followed the developments at Waverly Labs, with a particular focus on their innovative wearable language translation devices.
At this year’s CES, the Brooklyn-based technology company introduced a novel design for their translation technology.
Introducing Subtitles: A Countertop Translation Display
Subtitles is a device featuring a dual-sided touchscreen display.
It’s intended for placement on counters or desks in public-facing environments like restaurants, retail locations, banks, airports, and hotels.
A user selects their desired language and speaks, with the translated text appearing on the opposing display with minimal delay.
Beyond Language Translation: Accessibility Features
This system offers potential benefits beyond simply bridging language gaps.
It could serve as a valuable aid for individuals with hearing impairments, functioning similarly to live, in-person closed captioning.
Waverly Labs draws a comparison to the experience of viewing a translated film.
Supported Languages and Availability
The Subtitles system leverages Waverly’s existing translation technology.
It currently supports translation between 20 languages and 42 distinct dialects, including:
- English
- French
- German
- Italian
- Portuguese
- Spanish
- Arabic
- Greek
- Russian
- Hindi
- Turkish
- Polish
- Chinese Mandarin
- Japanese
- Korean
- Cantonese
- Hebrew
- Thai
- Vietnamese
- Dutch
Demonstrations of the device are currently underway at CES, with an anticipated release sometime during the second quarter of the year.
Pricing information has not yet been disclosed.
New Ambassador Interpreter Version Also Launched
Waverly Labs also took the opportunity at CES to unveil an updated version of their Ambassador Interpreter over-ear translator.
This updated model is currently available for purchase at a price of $179.
