Twitter Spaces Set for Public Release in April

Twitter Spaces, the social media platform’s answer to Clubhouse, is anticipated to launch publicly in April, as announced by the company during a live Twitter Space audio session on Wednesday.

According to Alex (@akkhosh) who hosted the Space, Twitter intends to empower all users to create and host their own Twitter Spaces rooms starting next month.

Confirmation from Twitter

Following the announcement, TechCrunch contacted Twitter for verification. A spokesperson confirmed that the rollout will indeed include both Android and iOS users, not solely beta testers.

This signifies a rapid development cycle for the feature, which initially entered public testing late last year.

Rapid Development and Future Features

The pace of development at Twitter has been remarkably swift in recent months.

The audio chat feature has quickly evolved, with improvements to titles, descriptions, scheduling, co-host and moderator support, and guest list management.

Future enhancements under consideration include the integration of music within Spaces and improved methods for incorporating tweets.

Potential Concerns and Safety Measures

The quick launch raises concerns about potential misuse, mirroring issues seen on competitor Clubhouse, such as verbal abuse and scams.

While Twitter Spaces is currently non-public, reports of session hijacking have already surfaced.

Prioritizing User Safety

Initially, Twitter emphasized prioritizing safety for “women and those from marginalized backgrounds” during the testing phase.

However, recent communication has focused more on feature development than on anti-abuse policies.

Addressing the Root of the Problem

Twitter executives have often avoided explaining the rationale behind features like Fleets and Spaces, which aim to encourage participation from users hesitant to tweet due to online harassment.

Many users remain apprehensive about using Twitter due to the prevalence of trolling, abuse, and attacks.

Recording Spaces for Accountability

A potential solution is the implementation of native recording for Spaces conversations.

This feature could deter abusive behavior and foster more thoughtful discussions, although it might also discourage some users from participating.

Long-Term Potential and Competition

The long-term viability of Twitter Spaces and Clubhouse remains uncertain, particularly as in-person events resume.

However, Twitter Spaces may have an advantage due to its integration with the broader Twitter ecosystem and plans to support creator monetization.
