TikTok Ban Faces Potential Further Delay

Former President Donald Trump has previously postponed a prohibition on TikTok on two separate occasions. He indicated on Sunday that he remains open to granting yet another extension.

According to a report by Axios, Trump stated during an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that should an agreement not be reached regarding the sale of TikTok’s U.S. assets to American entities by the existing June 19th deadline, he would be prepared to offer the company a further extension.

“I may not ought to reveal this,” Trump commented, “but I harbor a certain fondness for TikTok.”

Legislative Action and Initial Ban

Last year, Congress enacted legislation to ban TikTok unless its parent company, ByteDance, divested its U.S. operations. The app was temporarily removed from access when the ban initially went into effect in January.

Subsequently, Trump announced a 90-day delay to the ban, expressing a preference for a collaborative arrangement involving U.S. ownership.

Previous Extension and Chinese Government Concerns

As the subsequent deadline approached in April, Trump provided TikTok with an additional 75-day extension. He referenced the Chinese government’s disapproval, stating that they were “not very pleased with our Reciprocal Tariffs,” as the deal requires their approval.

ByteDance must secure approval from the Chinese government to finalize any sale of its TikTok operations.

The situation remains fluid, with the potential for further adjustments to the timeline depending on ongoing negotiations.
