Toyota's Vision for Woven City and the Role of Robotics
The Toyota press conference at CES on Monday centered around Woven City, the innovative community planned by the automaker near Mount Fuji. A significant aspect of this project involves extensive automation, aiming to integrate robotics into numerous facets of the city’s operation.
Advancements in Robotic Learning
Robotics is expected to be central to Toyota’s efforts to automate the 2,000-person city. This includes the deployment of autonomous vehicles and drones, intended to provide safe escort services for residents during nighttime hours.
Toyota’s research division, known as TRI, is actively working to enhance robotic learning capabilities. Recently, a collaboration was established with Boston Dynamics. This partnership will leverage Toyota’s imitation learning technology with the new, all-electric Atlas humanoid robot.
Mastering Dexterity: The T-Shirt Folding Challenge
A complex task such as folding t-shirts serves as an ideal starting point for these learning exercises. Akio Toyoda, the CEO, presented a demonstration of how the company is training robotic arms to fold t-shirts in the traditional Japanese style.
The process begins with a human operator demonstrating the correct folding technique using manual grippers. According to Toyota, the robotic system can acquire this skill within a single night.
Addressing an Aging Population
While t-shirt folding exemplifies dexterity, it represents a broader application. Woven City is anticipated to house approximately 2,000 residents, including a substantial number of retirees.
Japan has increasingly focused on automation as a means of supporting its growing elderly population over the last few decades. This trend is a key driver behind the development of technologies showcased in Woven City.
A Glimpse into the Future of Elder Care
Woven City functions, in part, as a practical demonstration of potential future solutions for providing care to older adults. The integration of robotics aims to enhance the quality of life and independence for senior citizens.
