Tile Integrates Tracking Technology with Fitbit

Tile, the company renowned for its Bluetooth-based lost item trackers, is now extending its services to wearable technology through a new collaboration with Fitbit. This marks the first time Tile’s tracking capabilities will be available directly on a wearable device.

Fitbit Inspire 2 Users Gain Access

Beginning today, both new and existing users of the Fitbit Inspire 2 will receive access to Tile’s Bluetooth-finding technology without any additional cost. The integration is being rolled out via a software update.

Current Inspire 2 owners will receive a prompt within the Fitbit app to update their device. Following the update, users will be instructed to download the Tile mobile application to unlock the lost item-finding features.

How the Tracking Works

Once the Tile app is installed, Inspire 2 users can locate their misplaced Fitbit within Bluetooth range, such as inside their home. If the device is outside of Bluetooth range, the Tile network comes into play.

Tile’s extensive network, powered by the Tile app installed on numerous smartphones, allows for broader location tracking. When another Tile app user comes near the lost Fitbit, its location is anonymously shared with the owner.

Tile’s Network Reach

Tile currently locates approximately 6 million unique items daily across 195 countries. This vast network significantly increases the chances of recovering lost items.

Monetization and Premium Features

While the core Tile service is offered freely to Fitbit users, the company generates revenue through device sales, in-app subscriptions, and strategic partnerships.

An optional Tile Premium subscription is available to Inspire 2 users for $2.99 monthly or $29.99 annually. This subscription includes benefits like free battery replacements for Tile devices, a 30-day location history, item reimbursement options, and proactive alerts when you leave home without essential items.

Google and Fitbit’s Perspective

Larry Yang, Director of Product Management at Fitbit (now under Google ownership since early 2021), stated that the integration of Tile technology enhances the convenience and functionality of the Inspire 2.

He further expressed excitement about the partnership and the potential to expand Tile’s finding technology to additional Fitbit devices in the future, allowing users to focus on their health without worrying about lost devices.

Expanding Partnerships

The collaboration with Fitbit represents one of over 20 partnerships Tile has established, integrating its technology into various categories including audio, travel, smart home, and PCs.

Tile has previously collaborated with consumer electronics companies like Skullcandy, Bose, and Sennheiser, demonstrating its growing presence in the tech ecosystem.

Increased Competition

This expansion of partnerships is becoming increasingly important as Tile faces growing competition from companies like Apple and Samsung.

Apple is developing AirTags, utilizing both Bluetooth and ultra-wideband technology for precise item location. Samsung’s Galaxy SmartTag will also feature an ultra-wideband version.

Antitrust Concerns and Advocacy

Tile has been a vocal advocate in U.S. antitrust investigations concerning Apple’s practices. The company has testified in congressional hearings regarding the negative impact of Apple’s policies on its business.

Tile has actively pushed for third-party access to Apple’s “Find My” app to create a more level playing field. It also joined the Coalition for App Fairness, advocating for app store regulation in various U.S. states.

Strategic Alliance with Google

The partnership with Google, through Fitbit, can be viewed as a strategic move by Tile to strengthen its position in the wearables market prior to the anticipated release of Apple’s AirTags.
