Threads Reaches 350M Users - Meta's Twitter Rival Gains Traction

Instagram Threads Reaches 350 Million Monthly Active Users
Instagram Threads, positioned as a competitor to X, has surpassed 350 million monthly active users. This information was disclosed by Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, during the company’s Q1 2025 earnings conference call held on Wednesday.
This represents a notable expansion of the platform’s user base, with a gain of 30 million users compared to the previous quarter. Meta had previously reported 320 million users for Threads.
Accelerated Growth
The rate of user acquisition has accelerated. Threads experienced a 30 million user increase in the first quarter of 2025, exceeding the 20 million added in Q4 2024.
Interestingly, within just one quarter, Threads onboarded almost as many users as Bluesky, a relatively new decentralized social application. Bluesky currently boasts approximately 35 million users.
Comparison to Competitors
X, however, maintains a larger user base, currently exceeding 600 million monthly active users. This figure was communicated by X’s CEO, Linda Yaccarino, on Wednesday.
Meta’s Ecosystem
Despite being smaller than Meta’s established platforms – Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp – Threads’ growth is solidifying its position within the microblogging landscape.
Meta reports that over 3.4 billion individuals engage with at least one of its applications on a daily basis.
Future Outlook
Zuckerberg informed investors during the earnings call that the observed growth suggests Threads is “continuing to progress towards becoming our next significant social application.”
Furthermore, a 35% increase in user engagement, measured by time spent on the platform, has been attributed to enhancements in Threads’ recommendation algorithms.
