US Education Problem: Can Big Tech Help?

The Growing Awareness of Technology's Impact

Congressional inquiries are prompting a growing national recognition of the potentially detrimental effects of unchecked technological advancement, particularly concerning young individuals.

Instances like the revelations from the Facebook Papers and the ongoing trial of Elizabeth Holmes serve as stark reminders that the technology sector frequently prioritizes appealing marketing strategies over demonstrable outcomes. However, why does a reliance on Big Tech persist when addressing significant challenges in areas such as healthcare and education?

Personal Observations and a Call for Re-evaluation

My experience transitioning from the corporate world to the tech industry, and subsequently to leading advocacy for racial justice in education, has revealed the dangers of prioritizing superficial promises over tangible, measurable progress and disregarding established expertise.

A reimagining of our education system, especially within STEM disciplines, is undoubtedly necessary to adequately prepare future generations. Nevertheless, the assumption that the tech industry should spearhead this transformation remains questionable. Providing support, certainly, but leading the charge?

The Tech Industry's Talent Agenda and Educational Initiatives

Driven by the escalating demand for skilled tech professionals, major technology companies naturally seek to expand tech education. This has manifested in prominent initiatives aimed at introducing coding and computer science to K-12 students.

Examples include Tim Cook’s advocacy for mandatory coding in school curricula and the founding of Code.org by early Facebook and Dropbox investors. Over the past decade, more than 100 million students globally have participated in the Hour of Code, and approximately 70% of parents now consider computer science education important for their children.

The Pitfalls of Prioritizing Vision Over Substance

It is crucial to avoid equating a compelling vision with actual achievement, much like the initial investment in Elizabeth Holmes despite unfulfilled promises and a carefully cultivated image.

Currently, some of the world’s most innovative tech minds are backing efforts to enhance access to tech education. Yet, the populations poised to benefit most from these opportunities continue to be underserved. Since 2009, the proportion of women pursuing computer science (CS) undergraduate degrees in the U.S. has decreased from 20.7% to 18.7%, while African-American CS undergraduates have dropped by 3%.

The Limitations of Short-Term Interventions

Brief educational programs – such as those offering free online coding modules, mentorship events, or global hackathons – have proven successful in attracting private-sector attention and securing donor investments through impactful branding.

However, even as a STEM-focused student, while such resources would have been welcome, they wouldn’t have sustained my journey to earning a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from a leading university.

The Importance of Sustained Support and Community

Achieving that goal required relatable and accessible educators and professionals who believed in my potential. A supportive community of peers was essential for navigating challenges and validating my experiences as a minority in predominantly white environments.

Crucially, consistent access to rigorous STEM education and the necessary technical resources were also vital for completing assignments.

Addressing Systemic Barriers in the Tech Pipeline

For communities of color, disruptions in the tech pipeline extend beyond access to laptops or AP computer science courses. Gaps exist from secondary education through college admissions and into hiring practices within top tech companies.

Isolated interventions are merely temporary fixes, even when implemented on a large scale.

Tech's Role: Amplification, Not Erasure

The current scrutiny of social media giants demonstrates that technology doesn’t eliminate cultural differences or societal problems; it amplifies them. To make a genuine contribution to improving our education system, the tech industry must learn from this and strive to understand not only what is lacking but also how to effectively support existing initiatives.

A Successful Model: SMASH Academy

At SMASH, a STEM justice education nonprofit, 79% of our scholars graduate and pursue a bachelor’s degree in STEM, compared to a national average of 39% for the same demographic.

SMASH Academy, our core program, provides a multiyear, immersive, and culturally relevant STEM education, employing predominantly instructors of color trained in technical and career mentorship, prioritizing student voice and choice. Scholars progress through a series of programs, receiving college admissions coaching, essay workshops, and financial aid guidance. They then secure paid internships with partner companies like Raytheon.

The Value of Long-Term Investment

Such long-term educational interventions are more resource-intensive, time-consuming, and complex to implement, but they are ultimately the most effective at driving positive student outcomes.

Fortunately, numerous community-based organizations nationwide have already established a foundation to complement this long-term, holistic approach.

A Call for Strategic Philanthropy

As racial and socioeconomic disparities in STEM education continue to widen, donors have a critical role to play. The necessary expertise and talent are available to create the change our nation’s future demands, but resources must be redirected to maximize impact.

When evaluating investments, clearly define and rigorously test the impact metrics of potential recipients. What constitutes success? How will the program’s benefits be realized in the short and long term? Does the initiative effectively address the obstacles faced by students of color?

A Shift in Focus for Tech Leaders

Leaders like Tim Cook and Mark Zuckerberg have a role to play, but their greatest impact may lie outside the traditional computer lab. If these companies are genuinely committed to closing achievement gaps in public education, they must prioritize tech equity policies and educational programs that deliver tangible results, going beyond simply creating a positive narrative.

This requires sector-wide advocacy and funding for policies and partnerships with existing community-based interventions, ensuring that the over 20 million Black and Latinx students in K-12 public schools receive culturally relevant computing education and are prepared to contribute meaningfully to a diverse and socially conscious tech workforce.

Beyond Technology: A Focus on Existing Solutions

The future of STEM education won’t be more equitable by simply providing the latest technology to every student or creating free coding courses. It will be achieved by recognizing and supporting the solutions that already exist and acting accordingly.

Tech companies seeking to contribute to education shouldn’t revert to typical Silicon Valley practices. For our youth, we cannot afford to invest in solutions that sound promising but fail to deliver real impact. This is not a criticism, but a call to action. Let’s begin a dialogue.
