Zenyum Raises $40M Series B Funding - D2C Dental Brand

Zenyum Secures $40 Million Series B Funding to Expand Affordable Cosmetic Dentistry
Zenyum, a company focused on increasing the accessibility of cosmetic dental treatments, has recently announced the successful completion of a $40 million Series B funding round. A significant portion, $25 million, was contributed by L Catterton, a private equity firm specializing in consumer brands.
Additional investors participating in this round included Sequoia Capital India – of which Zenyum is a former participant in the Surge accelerator program – RTP Global, Partech, TNB Aura, Seeds Capital, and FEBE Ventures. Anjana Sasidharan, Head of Growth Investments at L Catterton Asia, is set to join Zenyum’s board of directors.
Total Funding and Investor Confidence
With this latest investment, Zenyum’s total funding to date reaches $56 million. This figure incorporates a previously announced $13.6 million Series A round secured in November 2019. Sasidharan commented in a press release that Zenyum’s unique business approach provides a substantial competitive edge.
She further expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with the company’s leadership team to achieve their ambitious growth objectives. L Catterton’s portfolio also features other dental-focused investments, such as Ideal Image, ClearChoice, dentalcorp, OdontoCompany, Espaçolaser, and 98point6.
Zenyum’s Product Portfolio
Established in 2018, Zenyum now offers a range of products designed to improve oral health and aesthetics. These include the ZenyumSonic electric toothbrush, Zenyum Clear transparent aligners created using 3D printing technology, and ZenyumClear Plus, designed for more intricate teeth straightening procedures.
Cost-Effective Alternatives to Traditional Braces
According to founder and CEO Julian Artopé, ZenyumClear aligners can offer cost savings of up to 70% when compared to conventional braces – including metal, lingual, and other clear aligner options like Invisalign. The precise cost depends on the individual patient’s dental condition and desired outcome.
Currently, Zenyum Clear is priced at $2,400 SGD (approximately $1,816 USD), while ZenyumClear Plus ranges from $3,300 to $3,900 SGD (roughly $2,497 to $2,951 USD).
Leveraging Technology to Reduce Costs
The company achieves lower pricing by integrating a network of dental partners with a proprietary technology platform. This system enables providers to effectively monitor patient progress while minimizing the number of required in-clinic visits.
The process begins with prospective customers submitting a photograph of their teeth to Zenyum for an initial assessment of suitability for either ZenyumClear or ZenyumClear Plus. If deemed appropriate, an in-person consultation with a dentist is scheduled, including X-rays and a 3D scan.
This consultation incurs a fee of $120 to $170 SGD, paid directly to the dental clinic. Once the aligners are manufactured, the patient returns for a fitting. Dentists then utilize Zenyum’s application to track progress, requesting additional in-person visits only when necessary.
Geographic Availability and Future Expansion
ZenyumClear is presently available in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Macau, Vietnam, Thailand, and Taiwan, with plans for further market expansion underway.
Market Opportunity and Sequoia India’s Perspective
Pieter Kemps, Principal at Sequoia India, highlighted the significant market potential within Zenyum’s core regions. He noted that approximately 300 million consumers in Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan possess increasing disposable income allocated to personal care.
Kemps believes that demand for invisible braces will experience substantial growth, but emphasizes the importance of robust execution in delivering a complex product that becomes the preferred choice for consumers. He asserts that Zenyum excels in this area, demonstrating excellent execution, innovative product development, leading Net Promoter Scores, rapid growth, and strong financial performance. This Series B funding reflects this confidence and the belief in the substantial opportunities ahead.
