Samsung ES6500 40-inch 3D 1080p Smart TV Review & Giveaway

Samsung ES6500 40-inch 3D 1080p Smart TV
With a rating of 10/10, the Samsung ES6500 Smart TV represents a leading choice within the entry-level smart television category. It delivers images that are both sharp and vibrant, coupled with audio that is both robust and distinct.
Furthermore, it incorporates a selection of features designed to simplify the user experience.
Key Features and Overview
For some time, a significant trend has been the acquisition of large, flat-screen televisions primarily for display purposes. Initially, screen size was the dominant consideration for consumers.
However, the focus has shifted. Contemporary television buyers now prioritize features found in a Smart TV. This relatively new development integrates traditional television functionality with internet connectivity.
Much like modern gaming consoles, smart TVs offer access to online content and services, including streaming platforms like Netflix and standard web browsing capabilities.
This review focuses on Samsung’s ES6500 40-inch 3D Smart TV, a product first released in March 2012.
Notably, we are hosting a giveaway for one fortunate MakeUseOf reader. A high-definition 3D smart television, valued at $900, is up for grabs!
Understanding Smart TV Technology
- Smart TVs combine the functionality of a traditional television with internet access.
- They enable users to stream content from services like Netflix.
- Web browsing is also a standard feature on these devices.

Introduction
The Samsung ES6500 40" 1080p 3D Smart TV is presently offered by Amazon for $897.99, representing a substantial $600 reduction from its initial price point in March. This television is offered in a variety of screen sizes, spanning from 32 inches to 65 inches. Functioning as a Smart TV, it combines the capabilities of a conventional television with a broader range of functionalities.
For comparison, potential buyers might consider the LG Infinia 42" model, priced at $684.00, the Panasonic TC-L42E5 42" at $628, and the Sony NSX 40" which sells for $899.99.
It's important to note that this review is written from the viewpoint of someone new to television ownership. While I have extensive experience viewing high-definition content on various screen sizes and through different sources, I haven't personally owned a high-definition television before. Consequently, this assessment should be viewed as a first-time buyer’s perspective, offering a potentially unbiased evaluation.
Features Overview
The Samsung ES6500 boasts a sleek, modern design. Its slim bezel contributes to an immersive viewing experience. The TV utilizes Samsung’s Smart Hub interface, providing access to a wide array of streaming services and applications.
Smart Hub is intuitive and easy to navigate. Users can quickly access content from Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, and more. The built-in web browser allows for direct internet access on the television.
This model supports 3D viewing with compatible 3D glasses (sold separately). The 1080p resolution delivers sharp and detailed images. Furthermore, it includes multiple HDMI inputs for connecting various devices.
Picture Quality
The picture quality of the ES6500 is generally very good. Colors are vibrant and accurate, and the contrast ratio is sufficient for most viewing conditions. Black levels are reasonably deep, enhancing the overall image clarity.
Motion handling is adequate, though some fast-paced scenes may exhibit slight blurring. Samsung’s Clear Motion Rate technology helps to minimize this effect. Viewing angles are acceptable, but the picture quality degrades somewhat when viewed from extreme off-axis positions.
The TV offers several picture modes, including Dynamic, Standard, Natural, and Movie. Each mode is optimized for different types of content and viewing environments. Users can also customize the picture settings to their preferences.
Sound Quality
The built-in speakers provide adequate sound quality for casual viewing. However, for a more immersive audio experience, it is recommended to connect an external sound system. The TV supports Dolby Digital Plus and DTS Studio Sound.
The sound settings allow for adjustments to the equalizer and surround sound modes. A headphone jack is also included for private listening. Overall, the audio performance is sufficient but not exceptional.
Connectivity and Ports
The Samsung ES6500 offers a comprehensive selection of connectivity options. It includes four HDMI inputs, two USB ports, and an Ethernet port. Wi-Fi connectivity is also built-in.
- Four HDMI inputs allow connection of multiple devices.
- Two USB ports enable media playback from external drives.
- Ethernet port provides a wired network connection.
- Built-in Wi-Fi offers wireless connectivity.
Additionally, the TV features a composite video input and an optical audio output. These ports provide flexibility for connecting older devices and external audio systems.
Conclusion
The Samsung ES6500 represents a compelling value for those seeking a 40-inch 1080p 3D Smart TV. Its combination of features, picture quality, and affordability makes it a strong contender in its price range.
While the sound quality is adequate, an external sound system is recommended for a more immersive experience. Overall, this television is a solid choice for first-time buyers and experienced users alike.
Samsung ES6500 Smart TV: First Impressions
Upon receiving the delivery, my initial thought was centered on the substantial size of the packaging. It wasn't until unpacking that the extensive protective layers became apparent, befitting a high-value electronic device. Samsung’s packaging proved to be of a quality consistent with leading electronics manufacturers.
A thorough inspection revealed no blemishes or damage to the unit whatsoever.
The package included all necessary components, excluding the television itself. A detailed listing of the included items is provided below:
- A robust, four-legged metal stand, designed for tabletop placement.
- A set of four holder rings, contained within a zip-lock bag, intended for optional wall mounting.
- A boxed pair of 3D glasses, powered by batteries.
- A TV mount for wall installation.
- The power cable required for operation.
- A wire management guide to maintain a tidy setup.
- A remote control for convenient operation.
- Batteries to power the remote control.
- Eight screws, packaged in a zip-lock bag, used to secure the stand to the television.
- A comprehensive 44-page user manual.
After removing all items from the box, a positive impression was formed. The inclusion of everything needed for a streamlined setup – with the exception of a screwdriver – and the superior quality of the materials were notable.
The television stand is constructed from a polished, metallic material, lending it a sense of stability. However, the connection point between the stand and the TV chassis utilizes plastic components.
The provided user manual for the Samsung ES6500 Smart TV is remarkably thorough. Given this was my initial purchase of an HDTV, and specifically a Smart TV, the fact that complete setup and functionality were achieved within thirty minutes is significant.
The manual incorporates illustrative diagrams to guide users through all procedures. While a table of contents would have been beneficial, its absence is a minor oversight.
Furthermore, the TV features a built-in electronic manual. Should the physical manual be misplaced, access to documentation remains readily available. This is a particularly thoughtful feature!

Design Aspects of the Samsung ES6500 Smart TV
The Samsung ES6500 Smart TV presents a design philosophy centered around minimalism and streamlined aesthetics. A consistent black color scheme is employed throughout the television’s construction. This extends to the frame, the supporting stand, and even the included remote control.
A subtly rounded, translucent border surrounds the display. This border functions both as a protective element for the screen and as a deliberate design feature, enhancing the overall visual appeal.
Located on the lower right side of the screen is a power indicator. This indicator glows red when the TV is in the off state, but remains unlit during operation. It serves solely as a status display and does not function as a power button.
Attempts to activate the television via direct manipulation of the indicator – including pressing, swiping, or rubbing – proved unsuccessful. The remote control is required for powering the device on and off.
Connectivity Options
The rear panel of the Samsung ES6500 Smart TV provides a comprehensive array of connection ports. These allow for integration with various external devices and audio systems.
- 3 HDMI ports are available for high-definition multimedia interface connections.
- 1 component video input port facilitates connections with older devices.
- 1 composite video input port offers compatibility with legacy systems.
- 3 USB ports enable connection of external storage devices.
- 1 Ethernet port allows for a wired network connection.
- 1 analog audio input and output pair is provided for traditional audio connections.
- 1 optical audio output port supports digital audio transmission.
- 1 antenna input is included for over-the-air broadcast reception.
Remote Control Features
The remote control included with the ES6500 exhibits a familiar design, resembling the majority of television remotes currently available. Despite this commonality, it offers a comfortable and ergonomic grip due to its rounded back.
The buttons on the remote are easily accessible and provide tactile feedback when pressed. A visual confirmation is also provided, as the TV’s power indicator briefly illuminates with each button press.
Several enhancements have been incorporated into the remote’s design. A toggleable control light is positioned adjacent to the power button. When activated, this feature illuminates the remote’s buttons upon each press, improving usability in low-light environments.
A centrally located, cube-shaped button in a vibrant color serves as a dedicated switch between standard television viewing and the Smart TV functionality. Pressing this button launches the Smart Hub, providing access to the television’s intelligent features.
Features Overview
In the past, a television's specifications were adequately conveyed through its model number, such as indicating a 40-inch screen size. Today, such information is insufficient to fully describe a modern television. The following details outline the capabilities of the Samsung ES6500 Smart TV.
- Display size: 40 inches, featuring an LED-backlit display
- Connectivity: Integrated WiFi and an Ethernet port are included
- Refresh rate: Operates at 120Hz
- Resolution: Full HD 1080p, boasting a Clear Motion Rate of 480Hz
- Image contrast ratio: Exhibits a contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1
- Image aspect ratio: Maintains a 16:9 aspect ratio
- 3D-capable

Upon initial power-up of the Samsung ES6500 Smart TV, a setup wizard was presented. This wizard guided me through a series of configuration settings. My preferred language was selected first, followed by choosing between Home and Demo Use modes (the Home setting is recommended).
The Samsung ES6500 Smart TV is equipped with WiFi functionality, eliminating the need for additional hardware to connect to a wireless network. Alternatively, a network cable can be connected directly to the Ethernet port. After providing my wireless network credentials, the TV automatically initiated a firmware update download.
Subsequently, the television intelligently began scanning for available channels. As I do not subscribe to a cable service, the process for cable channels remains unknown. However, the analog channel scan proceeded sequentially, checking for signal availability. Unfortunately, no analog channels were detected.

The primary attraction of the Samsung ES6500 Smart TV is its Smart Hub. This serves as the central access point to the television’s diverse features, activated by pressing the colored cube button on the remote control. The home screen displays options for accessing installed applications, alongside several standard functionalities:
- Channel: Allows for the management of personalized TV channels. Channels can be designated as favorites or removed from the channel list, enabling customized channel surfing.
- Web Browser: Provides access to the Internet.
- Schedule Manager: Facilitates the scheduling of specific shows and channels for viewing. This is particularly useful for tracking multiple upcoming programs. The Smart Hub provides reminders.
- Source: Enables viewing of media files directly from connected external sources, such as a USB flash drive.
- AllShare Play: Grants access to photos, videos, and music stored on USB devices, digital cameras, cell phones, and PCs. Wireless access to PCs and cell phones is possible via WiFi.

The application selection for the Samsung ES6500 Smart TV is impressive. At the time of review, over 50 apps were available, with Samsung continually adding more. Popular choices included Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Facebook, and Pandora.
I tested Pandora to evaluate its performance. After authentication through a computer browser, all my Pandora settings, including preferred stations, were downloaded to the TV. Within a minute, I was enjoying smooth jazz while relaxing.

The 3D functionality of the Samsung ES6500 Smart TV is activated by switching to "3D mode," which initially presents a distorted image with unusual colors. Two pairs of 3D glasses were included for shared viewing. While four glasses would have been preferable, the inclusion of two was appreciated.
The TV offers three distinct 3D modes: right-and-left, top-and-bottom, and 2D-to-3D conversion. Lacking any native 3D source material, I was unable to assess the glasses’ performance with genuine 3D content. However, the 2D-to-3D conversion yielded unsatisfactory results, which is not unexpected.

Adjusting the television’s settings is a straightforward process. The settings menu is neither exceptional nor deficient. No alterations to the video or sound settings were required for optimal performance, and the out-of-the-box quality was commendable. However, a qualification regarding picture and sound quality is necessary.
I do not possess the expertise of a videophile or audiophile. I can discern the difference between standard definition and high definition. With effort, I can differentiate between 720p and 1080p, and between 192kbps and 320kbps audio bitrates. However, these nuances are not a primary concern for me. As long as the image is visible and the sound is audible, it meets my requirements. Fortunately, the majority of user reviews for the Samsung ES6500 Smart TV concur with my assessment of the quality.
Is the Samsung ES6500 Worth the Investment?
My viewing habits lean towards online streaming services, favoring platforms like Netflix over traditional cable or physical media. Consequently, I’ve become accustomed to enjoying content on a computer display. However, the Samsung ES6500 has significantly altered my perspective. Its features are impressive, and it enhances the streaming experience considerably.
For dedicated television viewers, the Samsung ES6500 Smart TV may not represent the pinnacle of performance. While the 40" screen size is perfectly adequate for my needs, it could prove insufficient for some, particularly those residing in larger homes. The picture quality is certainly commendable, yet those seeking the absolute best available should consider models in a higher price range.
Conversely, if your primary intention is simply to connect a cable box or a gaming console like the Playstation 3, a smart TV might be an unnecessary expense. Investing approximately $900 in a television and foregoing the smart functionalities seems counterproductive; that capital could be better allocated towards a larger, conventional flat-screen TV. You’ll appreciate that decision later on.
However, as an introductory-level smart TV, the Samsung ES6500 Smart TV stands out as a leading option. It delivers sharp, vibrant visuals, coupled with robust and clear audio, alongside a suite of features designed to simplify your entertainment experience.
