Roblox Outlines Future Plans for Avatars, Monetization, and Developer Tools

During its annual developer conference on Thursday, Roblox detailed upcoming advancements for its rapidly expanding online multiplayer platform, a popular destination for children and teenagers.

Roblox co-founder and CEO David Baszucki presented a roadmap focused on enhancing player avatars, introducing novel in-game monetization methods, and simplifying the development process for creators.

Evolving Avatars and Self-Expression

Roblox is recognized for its distinctive, block-shaped character models and game visuals. However, the company is actively working to create more realistic and customizable avatars.

This shift aligns with the platform’s goals of maintaining appeal as its user base matures and fostering greater self-expression within its diverse virtual environments.

According to Roblox Chief Product Officer Manuel Bronstein, the platform is evolving beyond a single definition.

One key update is layered clothing, which will make avatar outfits appear more realistic and dynamic. Clothing will now drape naturally on avatars, regardless of their form.

These avatar updates represent a “huge evolution,” according to Bronstein, emphasizing the importance of self-identity in the metaverse and the need for precise clothing customization.

Monetization and Competition

Roblox is incentivized to refine its virtual fashion scene due to the thriving market for in-game items.

The company also aims to remain competitive with platforms like Epic Games’ Fortnite, which generates substantial revenue through brand partnerships.

More visually appealing virtual items will likely lead to more lucrative brand deals.

Enhanced Realism Through Technology

Roblox is introducing “dynamic heads” – facial animations for avatars – in beta, potentially integrated with facial tracking for realistic mouth movements.

This feature leverages technology acquired from Loom.ai, a digital avatar startup purchased in 2020.

Developers will initially experiment with a selection of head designs that retain the platform’s signature blocky aesthetic.

Alongside this, Roblox is expanding its voice chat rollout, moving the platform away from its text-chat origins toward more immersive interactions.

Age verification is now available for users aged 13 and up, granting early access to new features, including the new voice chat capabilities, starting this fall.

New Economic Opportunities for Creators

Roblox is introducing limited edition items, allowing creators to sell unique designs for a specific period or in limited quantities, fostering collectability within the game’s economy.

Creators can also earn royalties on subsequent sales, mirroring a feature found in some NFTs.

Bronstein explained that creators will eventually have control over the rules governing item resale.

Empowering Developers with Open Cloud

Developers will gain more flexibility through Open Cloud, enabling them to create content using third-party tools and integrate it into Roblox, rather than being limited to Roblox Studio.

This initiative aims to provide developers with increased data storage and establish Roblox as a versatile development hub.

The platform is also introducing graphics improvements, such as more realistic collision physics and aerodynamics.

Significant Payouts to Developers

Roblox is projected to pay out $500 million to developers in 2021, a substantial increase from $70 million three years prior.

Bronstein believes the metaverse will be entirely user-generated, and empowering creators will lead to greater immersion and a wider range of experiences on the platform.
