Rivian Layoffs: 600 Workers Cut in Third Round This Year

Rivian Announces Further Workforce Reduction
Rivian is implementing a further reduction in its workforce, impacting approximately 600 employees. This represents roughly 4% of the company’s total personnel, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.
Previous Staffing Adjustments
Earlier in the year, Rivian undertook two prior rounds of workforce adjustments. Approximately 100 to 150 positions were eliminated in September, affecting the commercial division. Further cuts were made in June, impacting manufacturing teams.
Focus on the R2 SUV
These reductions occur as Rivian prepares for the launch of its crucial R2 SUV, slated for release in 2026. The company intends to manufacture up to 150,000 of these electric vehicles annually at its facility in Normal, Illinois.
Recently, construction commenced on a new manufacturing plant near Atlanta. This facility will be dedicated to the production of the R2 and future vehicle variations.
Current Sales Challenges
Despite these preparations, Rivian is currently facing challenges in maintaining sales momentum with its existing vehicle lineup. Projected delivery numbers for the end of 2025 suggest a potential 16% decrease compared to the previous year’s sales performance.
Until the R2 becomes available, the company is navigating a period of slower growth.
