Qualcomm's New Chipset Enhances Wireless Earbud Performance

The market for wireless earbuds is now incredibly crowded, and a key factor driving this growth is the widespread availability of Bluetooth Audio SoCs – System on a Chip – from Qualcomm, including the QCC5100 and QCC30xx families. Today, the company is introducing its newest chip designed for wireless audio, the QCC305x.

This updated chip offers increased performance, featuring four processing cores in comparison to the three cores found in the previous 304x version. The primary benefit of this added processing capability is the potential for earbud manufacturers to integrate advanced features such as dynamic active noise cancellation and the ability to activate voice assistants like Alexa or Google Assistant using specific wake words.

The latest chipset also incorporates support for Qualcomm’s aptX Adaptive, enabling audio resolution up to 96kHz, and aptX Voice, which utilizes a three-microphone system for improved echo cancellation and noise reduction during calls – whether you’re mobile or participating in a video conference. Despite this boost in power, Qualcomm maintains that all-day battery performance is achievable, although the ultimate battery life will depend on the specific implementation by each manufacturer.

The new chip is also engineered to be compatible with the forthcoming Bluetooth LE Audio standard. While this standard is still under development, it promises features like multi-stream transmission for synchronized audio from a single source – particularly useful for earbuds – and the ability to share audio with others nearby. It also envisions location-based audio sharing, allowing public spaces like airports and gyms to broadcast Bluetooth audio to visitors.

Although Bluetooth LE Audio is still in its early stages, Qualcomm emphasized during a pre-announcement press event that its new chips will be prepared to support the standard once it is officially approved.

“Our QCC305x SoCs not only deliver many of our newest audio technologies to our mid-range truly wireless earbud offerings, but they are also designed to be ready for developers working with the upcoming Bluetooth LE Audio standard,” stated James Chapman, vice president and general manager of Voice, Music, and Wearables at Qualcomm, in the official announcement. “We believe this combination provides our clients with significant flexibility to innovate across various price points and allows them to address the evolving needs of today’s audio consumers, who increasingly depend on their truly wireless earbuds for both entertainment and productivity.”
