parler removed from google play store as apple app store suspension reportedly looms

Following Twitter’s announcement on Friday afternoon regarding the permanent suspension of President Trump’s account, Google announced its decision to remove Parler, a social media application favored by conservatives, from the Google Play Store. The removal was effective immediately, with Google stating that the app would remain suspended until its developers implemented a system for moderating and enforcing policies against objectionable material.
A Google representative communicated the following to TechCrunch:
The Parler application is no longer accessible on the Google Play Store.
The conservative-leaning platform gained prominence this week as reports emerged detailing threats of violence and coordination related to the disturbances at the Capitol building on Tuesday, which tragically resulted in five fatalities, including a Capitol Police officer. While established social media platforms swiftly removed content connected to the riots, violent rhetoric and threats were readily discoverable on Parler.
The application is used by numerous conservative personalities, including several members of the President’s family, although the President himself does not have an account.
Buzzfeed News reported on Friday that Parler had been notified by Apple that it would be removed from the App Store within 24 hours unless the company submitted an update outlining improvements to its content moderation practices. Parler CEO John Matze verified Apple’s action in a post on his Parler account, sharing a screenshot of the notification received from Apple.
The screenshot’s text stated, “Please be aware that Parler is accountable for all content created by users on your service and for guaranteeing that this content adheres to App Store standards concerning the safety and well-being of our users.” It continued, “We will not distribute applications that feature dangerous or harmful content.”
The application is currently still available on the App Store, however, users are presently reporting experiencing technical difficulties.
