OpenAI Data Retention Policy: Deleted Data Storage

OpenAI's Data Retention Policy for Operator
OpenAI has indicated that conversations and corresponding screenshots from users of Operator, their AI agent tool, may be stored for as long as 90 days.
This retention applies even after a user has manually deleted the chat logs.
Comparison with ChatGPT Data Retention
A comparable data retention policy exists for ChatGPT, OpenAI’s chatbot platform.
However, the storage duration for ChatGPT data is limited to 30 days, representing a 60-day difference compared to Operator.
Rationale Behind the Policy
OpenAI states that the extended retention period for Operator is a proactive measure to prevent misuse.
According to an OpenAI spokesperson who spoke with TechCrunch, the longer timeframe allows their teams to thoroughly analyze and address potential avenues for abuse.
This enhanced monitoring is intended to safeguard the product and maintain user safety, while still respecting user data control.
Introducing Operator
Operator was unveiled by OpenAI on Thursday and is currently available as a research preview.
Access is restricted to subscribers of the $200 monthly ChatGPT Pro plan.
It functions as a versatile AI agent equipped with an integrated browser, enabling it to execute specific actions on websites autonomously.
Capabilities of Operator
OpenAI asserts that Operator can automate a variety of tasks.
These include booking travel, securing restaurant reservations, and completing online purchases.
Within the Operator interface, users can select from several task categories, such as shopping, delivery, dining, and travel.
Screenshot Capture and "Take Over" Mode
To facilitate understanding of user interactions and appropriate action execution, Operator captures screenshots of its browser activity.
This includes identifying buttons and completing necessary forms.
It’s important to note that screenshots are not captured when the tool requires user intervention, such as password entry – a state referred to as “take over” mode.
User Privacy Considerations
The extended retention of screenshots depicting online activity may raise privacy concerns for some users.
OpenAI clarifies that, similar to ChatGPT, Operator data may be accessible to a limited group of authorized personnel and trusted service providers.
This access is for purposes such as abuse investigation and legal compliance.
