Microsoft Bans Gun Avatar Items on Xbox Live - News

The Evolution and Upcoming Changes to Xbox Live Avatars

Xbox Live Avatars were initially introduced in 2008. Microsoft has since successfully monetized them through the sale of virtual clothing and accessories.

Users are able to purchase items from the Avatar store, allowing friends to view their customized appearances. Furthermore, certain games offer unlockable Avatar items as rewards.

A Shift in Accessory Availability

Beginning January 1st, a change will be implemented regarding Avatar accessories. Games such as Gears of War have previously featured weapon-based items, like the iconic Lancer.

However, Microsoft will discontinue the sale of these types of accessories after the stated date. The company maintains its support for mature-rated games.

The concern stems from the broader availability of Avatars across various experiences, including family-oriented titles. The presence of weapon-themed items could be considered inappropriate in these contexts.

With the introduction of the Kinect sensor, Microsoft has emphasized the development of family-friendly games utilizing Avatars. Gamers participating in these experiences may prefer not to encounter Avatars equipped with virtual firearms.

Existing Purchases Preserved

Players who have already acquired these weapon-based accessories will retain access to them. Microsoft will not remove items previously purchased with user funds.

For those interested in obtaining these accessories, it is recommended to visit the Marketplace before the New Year. After January 1st, they will no longer be available for purchase.
