Minecraft Realms: A Simple No-Stress Server Setup Guide

Setting Up a Minecraft Realms Server

Numerous methods exist for hosting a Minecraft game, but acquiring a server directly from Mojang, the creators of Minecraft, offers notable ease of use.

A complimentary 30-day trial is now included, enhancing the accessibility of this hosting option.

Purchasing a Minecraft Realms Server

The process of obtaining and setting up a Minecraft Realms server is straightforward. It's designed to be user-friendly, even for those with limited technical experience.

Mojang provides a direct purchasing pathway, streamlining the server acquisition process.

Configuration Steps

Once purchased, configuring your Minecraft Realms server involves a few key steps. These ensure the server operates according to your preferences.

You'll be guided through settings related to world access, game rules, and player permissions.

Key Configuration Options

  • World Settings: Control the type of world generated and its initial conditions.
  • Game Rules: Adjust gameplay mechanics, such as difficulty and mob spawning.
  • Player Permissions: Manage who can access the server and their level of control.

These options allow for a customized Minecraft experience tailored to your specific needs.

Proper configuration is essential for a smooth and enjoyable multiplayer gaming session.

The Benefits of Utilizing Minecraft Realms

Minecraft Realms represents a remarkably straightforward solution for establishing a multiplayer server online. This is ideal for personal use with friends, for facilitating gameplay among children and their peers, or for enabling collaborative experiences for larger groups.

The platform accommodates up to 200 concurrent players, making it suitable for extensive social circles, including extended family and classmates. It eliminates concerns regarding local connection instability or insufficient bandwidth for hosting multiple players, providing a consistently available server accessible to all invited participants.

Key Features and Capabilities

Realms supports the creation and management of multiple worlds, with options for regular backups and saving data locally. It also facilitates the implementation of mini-games and the use of player whitelists, ensuring that only authorized individuals can join the server.

Server administration is conveniently handled directly within the Minecraft client, offering a user-friendly interface accessible to both players and non-player parents.

Why We're Highlighting Minecraft Realms Now

We have previously discussed Minecraft Realms in articles such as "The Parents' Guide to Minecraft" and "How to Select a Remote Minecraft Host." We are revisiting the topic today due to two significant developments.

Firstly, it continues to be the most effective method for parents and those unfamiliar with complex server management to create an online gaming environment. Secondly, Mojang has recently introduced both 30-day free trials and a price reduction.

A Realms subscription now costs $7.99 per month, down from the previous $9.99, and the free trial allows users to evaluate its benefits before committing to a paid plan.

Getting Started with Realms: A Quick Guide

Considering these advantages, let's explore how to leverage the free trial, configure and manage your Realms account, and, crucially, extend invitations to your friends for collaborative gameplay.

Essential Requirements for Minecraft Realm Setup

Establishing a Minecraft Realm requires a few prerequisites, most of which dedicated Minecraft players will already possess. A valid, premium Minecraft account is necessary – meaning you have a Mojang or Minecraft username enabling online gameplay. Furthermore, ensure your Minecraft client is up-to-date.

Should you decide to continue using Realms after the initial free trial, a credit card will be required for subscription purposes. The account used for trial activation and subsequent subscription will automatically be designated as the server administrator.

Administrator Account Considerations

If you intend to oversee your child’s Realm, utilizing your own account for activation and subscription is recommended. This allows you to maintain administrative control. Alternatively, your child’s account can be used to initiate the process.

For younger children, or those who may not yet be fully responsible, it's prudent to either assume administrative duties yourself or clearly establish boundaries regarding server settings modifications.

However, if your child demonstrates sufficient maturity and understanding of the configuration options, empowering them as the administrator of their Minecraft Realm is encouraged.

Benefits of Child Administration

Allowing your child to manage their own Realm fosters independence and provides them with the ability to make real-time adjustments. This includes seamlessly switching between creative worlds and mini-games without requiring assistance.

Moreover, assuming the role of Realm administrator can significantly enhance their standing among their peers, granting them a sense of ownership and control over their Minecraft experience.

Initiating Your Complimentary Trial

Regardless of whether your Realm is established through the Mojang website or directly within the Minecraft client, you can benefit from the recently reduced Realms pricing. However, the 30-day free trial is exclusively available to those who subscribe to Realms via the Minecraft client. Considering that most of your Realm administration will likely occur through the client, let’s proceed directly within the game. Launch your client at this time.

On the primary screen, as illustrated above, you will locate a button designated "Minecraft Realms". Select this button to continue.

A concise overview of the Realms functionality will be displayed, featuring buttons for both "Get a trial!" and "Buy a Realm!". Choose the "Get a trial!" option to begin.

You will be prompted to provide a name and description for your Realm. While your Realm is inherently private, it is advisable to avoid including personally identifiable information in these fields. Both the name and description can be modified at a later time.

Here, you have the ability to either create a new world or upload an existing one to your Realm. Let's examine the available choices:

Selecting "New World" will generate a completely new world, mirroring the experience of creating a single-player map on your computer. The "Upload world" option allows you to transfer a world from your computer to share with friends. This is particularly useful if you and others have already invested time building within a local map. For assistance in locating your Minecraft world for upload, refer to: How to Backup Your Minecraft Worlds, Mods, and More.

The "Adventure maps" option provides access to a selection of pre-designed adventure maps. These maps differ from standard Minecraft worlds through their deliberate design and utilization of command blocks – a form of in-game programming employed by map creators – to implement puzzles and a more structured gameplay experience. Alternatively, you can choose "Survival spawns" to select a survival map from a list featuring pre-built spawn areas. You always retain the option to skip this step and address map selection later, if desired.

Given that most users are familiar with the appearance of a new Minecraft world, and uploading a map simply involves copying an existing one, let's explore a "Survival spawns" map for this demonstration.

"Raider's Refuge" appears appealing. We will select this map. Remember, you can always delete a map if it doesn't meet your expectations and choose a new one from the survival map list or any of the other available options, such as creating a new world.

After selecting a world (or bypassing this step), you will be directed to the main Realms selection screen, as shown above. The Realm icon displays the skin head of the Realm creator. The Realm's name and description are listed alongside the player head, along with the name of the Realm owner/administrator.

On the right side, you'll find a status indicator resembling a traffic light (green indicates online, gray indicates offline, and red signifies an expired Realm requiring attention). Next to this indicator is a wrench icon, providing access to all Realm configuration options.

Before configuring any settings, let's join the Realm to verify its functionality. Upon your initial connection, you will be required to accept the terms of service.

Observe: a pre-constructed spawn site with intriguing areas to explore, and, coincidentally, the map began in the midst of a rainy night. This is a promising start to our new Realms server.

Now that we've confirmed the server is operational, let's explore how to modify settings, exchange worlds, and more.

Managing Your Minecraft Realms Account Configuration

Returning to the primary Realms screen – the one featuring the prominent white wrench – allows you to oversee a comprehensive array of settings. Navigate back to this screen and select the wrench icon associated with your Realms account.

Within this area, numerous customization options are available. We will proceed through the configuration menu, beginning with the Worlds selection in the screen's center, and then explore the subsequent sub-menus.

World Selection Process

As illustrated in the screenshot, four world slots are present. Currently, the initial slot holds the survival world we previously established. The subsequent two slots, labeled "empty," are available for future world installations. The final slot is designated for Minigames.

While Realms can accommodate multiple maps, only one can be actively hosted at any given time. This allows you to switch between the first, second, or third world, or alternatively, transition from a survival/creative/adventure map to a Minigame.

how-to-set-up-a-simple-no-stress-minecraft-server-with-minecraft-realms-10.jpg

The Minigame section offers a diverse selection of pre-loaded games. Should you desire a diversion from creative building or survival grinding, these games provide entertainment before resuming your primary world. (For a highly recommended starting point, consider "Missile Wars," depicted above, a remarkably enjoyable game that improves with increased player participation).

Switching worlds does not result in data loss; it simply pauses the current world. You can freely alternate between worlds. However, only the Realm owner possesses the authority to change the active world. Players accessing your Realm cannot independently select which world or minigame to play; the owner’s selection determines the loaded experience.

Detailed World Options

Selecting "World options" reveals a range of settings for the currently active world. These include the ability to modify the world's name, adjust the difficulty and game mode, and configure various gameplay-affecting parameters.

For instance, you can activate "spawn protection," creating a secure zone around the map's spawn point. Only the Realm owner (or a promoted individual) can modify blocks within this zone. This is ideal for constructing a central structure, like a castle, that players should not alter.

Furthermore, the World options menu allows you to control the spawning of animals, monsters, and NPCs (villagers), as well as enable or disable PvP (Player versus Player) combat.

To foster a more peaceful and creative environment, you can set the game difficulty to peaceful (disabling hostile mobs) and disable PvP, preventing conflicts between players.

Finally, the "Force Game Mode" setting ensures players join in the specified Game Mode, overriding any previous settings. The "Command Blocks" setting toggles the functionality of command blocks, a complex topic covered in our article, The Beginner's Guide to Command Blocks in Minecraft.

Managing World Backups

The "World backups" sub-menu provides tools to review, restore, and download backups of the currently loaded world.

how-to-set-up-a-simple-no-stress-minecraft-server-with-minecraft-realms-12.jpg

When would these functions be useful? If you and your friends are collaborating on a large project and encounter a setback (e.g., a creeper destroys a complex machine, a friend accidentally damages a structure), you can revert to a previous backup to undo the damage.

You can also archive worlds you've invested time in but no longer wish to actively play. For example, if you've built an impressive castle but want to start a new world, you can download the current world as a save file for local use.

General Settings

As previously mentioned, you have the ability to modify your Realm's name and description.

how-to-set-up-a-simple-no-stress-minecraft-server-with-minecraft-realms-13.jpg

Under the "Settings" sub-menu, you can rename your Realm and update its description. You can also close or open the Realm using the toggle at the top of the screen, effectively shutting down the server and restricting external access (though the owner retains control).

World Reset Functionality

The "Reset world" button, as its name suggests, restores the selected world to its initial state. Selecting this option prompts you to choose a new world type, accompanied by a warning that the current world will be deleted.

This action is irreversible. If you wish to preserve the current world, create a backup using the "World backup" function before resetting.

Welcoming Players to Your Minecraft Realm

Having completed the configuration process, let’s proceed to the primary function of your Minecraft Realms server: extending invitations to your friends for gameplay.

how-to-set-up-a-simple-no-stress-minecraft-server-with-minecraft-realms-14.jpg

To initiate this, navigate to the "Players" section within the main Realm configuration interface, as illustrated above.

how-to-set-up-a-simple-no-stress-minecraft-server-with-minecraft-realms-15.jpg

Initially, the player list will be empty. Choose "Invite player" and enter the Minecraft username of the individual you wish to join.

how-to-set-up-a-simple-no-stress-minecraft-server-with-minecraft-realms-16.jpg

After inviting players, they will appear in the "Invited" list. Their names are shown here with privacy in mind, protecting our testers. Observe the red 'X' and the gray badge icon next to each name.

Clicking the 'X' will rescind the invitation, removing the player from the server’s whitelist. Without a valid invitation, access to the server is denied. The badge icon signifies the player’s status: either a standard player or an operator.

Operators possess elevated privileges and access to server commands. Granting creative mode access, or adjusting the server’s game mode, is preferable to assigning operator status if a player simply requires in-game resources. Operator permissions extend far beyond resource acquisition. Further details on operator commands can be found in our prior guide, How to Run a Simple Local Minecraft Server With and Without Mods, and within the official Minecraft wiki’s server command documentation.

From this screen, you can also access "Player Activity," which displays a chart detailing player login times. This chart, while largely informational, can be helpful for monitoring server usage and investigating any in-game occurrences, such as identifying who was online during a specific event.

Next Steps for Your Minecraft Realm

You’ve now successfully established your Minecraft Realm. The remaining task involves extending invitations to friends and immersing yourselves in the game. While Realms may not offer the modding capabilities found on alternative server platforms, opportunities for unique personalization still exist.

It’s important to note the vast availability of vanilla maps – and even those enhanced with command block functionality – which can be readily uploaded to your Minecraft Realm. For discovering additional maps, we suggest revisiting the resources highlighted in our previous How-To Geek guide on Minecraft map installation: Planet Minecraft and Minecraft Maps.
