Maintaining a Static Local IP Address on Your PC
Occasionally, a requirement arises to ensure your computer consistently uses the same local IP address upon each startup. This consistency simplifies tasks such as port forwarding and content sharing across your network.
Why a Static IP Address is Beneficial
A fixed IP address can streamline network configurations. When your computer’s IP address remains constant, establishing connections for various applications becomes more reliable.
Consider scenarios where you need to access your PC remotely or host a server. A dynamic IP address, which changes periodically, would necessitate constant updates to your connection settings.

DHCP
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, or DHCP, is the generally preferred method for ensuring your computer consistently utilizes and reuses a specific local IP address. It’s likely you are already benefiting from DHCP more frequently than you realize. Most home routers employ DHCP, and connecting to either a Wi-Fi or wired network typically involves obtaining an IP address via this protocol.
Given that your router is already responsible for distributing IP addresses through DHCP, the necessary step is to configure a DHCP reservation within its settings. These reservations function by associating an IP address with your device’s unique MAC address.
Upon establishing this reservation, your router will exclusively assign that designated IP address to the device possessing the corresponding MAC address. This reservation persists even if the device is disconnected and reconnected to the network. Whenever the device with that MAC address connects, the router will automatically provide it with the correct IP address.
However, not all routers offer the capability to configure DHCP reservations. Older models, in particular, may utilize DHCP without providing any control over the IP addresses assigned to each device on the network. If your router lacks this feature, proceed to the section detailing static IP configuration.
The process for configuring DHCP reservations varies slightly depending on the router manufacturer, but generally follows these steps:
Initially, determining your router’s IP address is crucial to access its configuration interface. Open a command prompt (by typing cmd into the Start menu) and enter the command ipconfig.
Locate and note the Default Gateway IP address displayed in the results.

Alternatively, if you prefer a graphical user interface, navigate to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings.

Within this menu, right-click on your network adapter, select Status, and then choose Details.
The default gateway address will be visible within the details information presented.

With your router’s IP address known, enter it into a web browser to access the configuration menu.

The router will likely request a password. If you have previously set one, enter it and click OK. Otherwise, it should default to a standard value. Many Linksys and other routers use a blank username and the password "admin" for initial access. If this fails, consult your router’s documentation or search online for the default credentials.
The location of DHCP settings varies by router model. On Linksys routers, they are typically found on the main login page. Regardless of your router, the DHCP configuration page will generally resemble the following:

If the menu already displays MAC addresses, IP addresses, and hostnames, the process is simplified. Simply select the desired device, choose an IP address, and click "Add Clients". Once completed, the configured settings will be listed under "Clients Already Registered".
If your router requires manual entry of the MAC address, you can retrieve it using the same method employed to find the default gateway address earlier.

After configuring and saving your settings, your device(s) should consistently receive the same local IP address.
Static IP Addresses
A static IP address is a useful configuration when DHCP is unavailable or when a consistent IP is required for a specific duration. To implement this, begin by accessing the Control Panel. Navigate through Network and Internet, then to Network and Sharing Center, and finally select Change adapter settings.
Locate your network adapter within the list and right-click to access its properties.

Within the Properties window, select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" and click the Properties button.

This will open a menu where you can manually define your IP address. The subnet mask will typically auto-populate upon address entry. Your default gateway address can be determined using the methods previously discussed.
It’s crucial to remain within the same subnet as your router, commonly 192.168.1.X. Choose an IP address sufficiently high to avoid potential conflicts with the DHCP range assigned by your router.

DNS server settings can be found within your router’s configuration interface, as illustrated in the example screenshot. Alternatively, Google’s public DNS servers – 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 – can be utilized.
For Linksys routers, this information is generally located under the "Status" tab. Similar settings will be available on most other router models.

Proper configuration of these settings ensures your device maintains a consistent network identity.
