Google Previews Next-Generation AI-Powered Home Speaker

An early look at Google’s forthcoming smart home device was unveiled on Wednesday. The Google Home speaker, powered by artificial intelligence, is slated for release in spring 2026.

The new device will be available at a price point of $99 and will feature four distinct color options: Porcelain, Hazel, Berry, and Jade.

Strategic Launch Timing

The launch schedule, arriving somewhat later than initially anticipated, reflects a deliberate strategy by Google. This was explained by Anish Kattukaran, chief product officer for Google Home and Nest, during a press conference preceding Wednesday’s announcement.

Prior to the new speaker’s availability, the company intends to integrate the enhanced Gemini AI functionality into existing Google Home devices. This will allow current users to test the new features and provide valuable feedback.

“Ensuring a seamless experience for our existing user base is paramount,” stated Kattukaran. “We aim to avoid compelling customers to purchase a new device unless they specifically desire to do so.” He further added, “However, we believe many will find the upgrade appealing.”

Gemini AI Integration and Hardware Features

Designed specifically for Gemini AI, the speaker will incorporate a processor capable of handling the demands of the AI assistant. This processor will also manage features such as background noise suppression, reverb control, and echo cancellation.

This advanced processing is intended to prevent misinterpretations during conversations, even when multiple individuals are speaking in the same room.

A light ring positioned beneath the speaker will provide enhanced visual cues regarding Gemini’s operational status. This includes indications of listening, processing, reasoning, and responding, particularly within Gemini Live mode. A Google Home Premium subscription will be required to utilize Gemini Live.

Audio Capabilities and Sustainable Design

The Google Home device will deliver 360-degree audio and retain the ability to be grouped with other speakers via the Google Home app for synchronized playback.

A new feature allows users to pair two Google Home speakers with a Google TV Streamer, creating a surround-sound experience – a long-requested functionality.

The device’s exterior is constructed from a 3D-knitted material, designed to minimize fabric waste and promote environmental sustainability.
