Google Enhances Android Auto and Automotive OS

Numerous enhancements are being implemented within Google’s Android Auto ecosystem. The company’s Automotive OS will also be integrated into a wider range of vehicles, notably including Honda models starting with the 2022 lineup.

The Evolution of Android Auto

Launched in 2015, Android Auto initially provided a connected experience, linking smartphones to in-car stereo systems. This allowed drivers to stream music, receive spoken navigation instructions via Maps, and make calls through the vehicle’s audio system.

Over the past six years, both Android Auto and the underlying infotainment systems have undergone significant advancements. Google recently announced further feature expansions for drivers, regardless of whether they utilize Android Auto on their phones or directly through their car’s built-in system.

New Features and UI Redesign

Google has revamped the Android Auto user interface to provide streamlined access to a diverse selection of content platforms. These include Amazon Music, Audible, iHeartRadio, JioSaavn, Pandora, Podcast Addict, SoundCloud, and YouTube Music, all accessible with a single tap.

The system will now also read incoming text messages aloud, enabling drivers to respond using voice commands. These updates are expected to roll out over the coming weeks in English-speaking countries, as well as Germany, Spain, Mexico, France, and Italy.

Dual-SIM and Work Profiles

For users with dual-SIM phones, Android Auto will facilitate the creation of distinct Work and Personal profiles. Relevant contacts and calendar events will be displayed based on the driving context.

Enhanced In-Car Entertainment and Payments

Vehicles equipped with in-car displays will soon benefit from new features, including gaming options. Google is collaborating with GameSnacks to offer drivers brief, engaging games to enjoy while parked.

Furthermore, Google is simplifying the process of paying for fuel. Drivers can initiate contactless payments using Google Pay simply by saying, “Hey Google, pay for gas.” The system will initially be available at Exxon and Mobil stations, with support for Shell, Conoco, Phillips 66, and 76 stations planned for the near future.

Expanding Android Automotive OS

The integrated Android Automotive OS, currently found in select Ford, GM, and Volvo vehicles, is set to expand to additional manufacturers.

Google has announced a partnership with Honda, which will begin incorporating AAOS into its vehicles starting with the 2022 model year. The operating system is also becoming available in the Chevy Silverado and the Renault Mégane E-Tech.
