DoorDash Tests Full-Time Employment & Ultra-Fast Delivery in NYC

DoorDash Launches Ultra-Fast Delivery Service and New Employment Model
DoorDash has revealed plans to introduce exceptionally rapid delivery options, promising service within 10 to 15 minutes. This initiative begins with a single DashMart location situated in Chelsea, New York City.
Expansion Plans and New Partnerships
Initially, the ultra-fast delivery service will be available from the new Chelsea location. DoorDash intends to broaden the service to additional locations and collaborate with new partners throughout New York and other cities in the coming months.
A Shift in Employment Strategy: Introducing DashCorps
Alongside the delivery speed enhancement, DoorDash is piloting a novel employment structure. This model will utilize full-time employees, rather than relying solely on gig workers, to manage these expedited deliveries.
The Evolution of DashMart
DoorDash initially launched DashMart, its digital convenience store platform, in April 2020.
These stores offer a range of household essentials and typical convenience store items. Functioning as micro-fulfillment centers, DashMarts stock approximately 2,000 products. Warehouse associates are responsible for order fulfillment, and Dashers then collect and deliver the orders to customers.
Customers within the designated delivery area can now place orders through the DoorDash app or website. The DashMart Chelsea location will operate daily from 7 am to 2 am.
Optimizing for Speed
To guarantee the 15-minute delivery timeframe, these ultra-fast deliveries are confined to a limited radius around the DashMart location. This minimizes courier travel time and ensures familiarity with the routes.
Dashers utilizing e-bikes will have their speeds capped at 20 mph, according to DoorDash.
DashCorps: A New Opportunity for Couriers
The introduction of ultra-fast deliveries presents a new employment opportunity for couriers seeking predictable schedules and increased earnings.
DashCorps, a newly established DoorDash entity, will directly employ couriers who will adhere to regular work schedules and report to a designated manager.
These employees will receive an hourly wage starting at $15 per hour, in addition to tips, and will be eligible for comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, and vision insurance, Employee Assistance Programs, Flexible Spending Accounts, and commuter benefits.
Expanded Responsibilities for DashCorps Employees
DashCorps employees will utilize a dedicated app designed for their roles, encompassing responsibilities beyond delivery, such as shelf-stocking, customer support, and administrative tasks.
They will be required to wear a uniform and are expected to work an average of 20 hours per week, with many potentially working full-time.
Expanding Local Partnerships
DoorDash currently collaborates with over 400 local convenience stores and grocers in New York City. The company intends to further expand its network through partnerships facilitated by DashCorps, including local bodegas.
A Strategic Shift Away from the Gig Economy
This new initiative signals a potential departure from DoorDash’s traditional reliance on the gig worker model and a strategic adjustment in its overall approach.
It is noteworthy that DoorDash has previously opposed regulations aimed at granting employment rights to gig workers. This announcement represents a divergence from the gig worker model the company has actively defended.
“We’re proud to be a leader in providing economic opportunities that fit the lives of so many people. And now, we’re excited about the new employment opportunity that DashCorps offers for a different type of work,” stated DoorDash president Christopher Payne.
Enhancing Courier Safety with SafeDash
In addition to providing safety training and equipment, the new courier app for full-time employees will integrate DoorDash’s in-app safety toolkit, SafeDash.
This recently launched toolkit is designed to enhance the safety and security of delivery providers. SafeDash is currently available in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, with nationwide access planned by the end of the year.
Supporting Small Businesses in New York
DoorDash has also established a new small business advisory council to guide its future collaborations with small businesses in New York.
Furthermore, the company has partnered with the Yemeni American Merchant Association (YAMA), a New York-based organization dedicated to small business advocacy and social support.
