Colgate, Coca-Cola & Unilever Join AB InBev's Sustainability Accelerator

Sustainable Supply Chains Gain Support from Major Corporations
A significant number of leading consumer goods and food corporations are aligning with Anheuser-Busch InBev, the parent company of Budweiser, to support an investment initiative. This program is designed to bolster early-stage businesses concentrating on enhancing the sustainability of supply chains.
Addressing Recycling and Climate Challenges
The announcement, coinciding with Earth Day, reflects a growing awareness among companies and consumers regarding the shortcomings of current recycling systems. These systems are proving inadequate in tackling the escalating issues related to plastic waste.
Furthermore, there's increasing scrutiny of the broader impact of both consumer habits and industrial production/distribution processes on the ongoing climate crisis.
The 100+ Accelerator Program
AB InBev’s 100+ Accelerator program was initially established in 2018. Its primary objective is to resolve supply chain difficulties in key areas such as water management, the circular economy, sustainable agricultural practices, and climate action.
These are challenges that AB InBev’s new partners – Colgate-Palmolive, Coca-Cola, and Unilever – also face directly.
Investment and Growth
Since its inception, AB InBev has provided support to 36 companies operating across 16 countries, as stated in a recent press release.
These startups have subsequently secured over $200 million in additional funding rounds.
Program Benefits for Startups
The accelerator program provides crucial funding for pilot projects. It also facilitates valuable consultations between early-stage companies and the executive leadership of prominent consumer brands.
Successful Pilot Programs
Through the program, AB InBev has collaborated with startups to implement various initiatives. These include:
- Developing returnable packaging systems.
- Introducing innovative cleaning technologies to minimize water and energy consumption in brewing facilities in Colombia.
- Offering insurance solutions to small-scale farmers in Africa and South America.
- Improving waste collection efforts in Brazil.
- Recycling electric vehicle batteries in China.
- Transforming spent grains from brewing into nutritious food products.
Growing Focus on Sustainability
Driven by increasing pressure from investors and regulatory bodies, companies are now prioritizing strategies to enhance the sustainability of their industrial operations.
Potential for Impact
These collaborative efforts among major corporations, though long anticipated, possess the potential to significantly reduce the environmental impact of business activities.
However, the extent of this impact will depend on the sincerity of their commitment and the speed with which they implement solutions beyond limited pilot programs.
Application Deadline
The deadline for applications to the latest program cohort is May 31, 2021.
