Calm Launches 'Daily Move' - New Fitness & Video Content

Calm Introduces "Daily Move" for Physical Activity

The meditation application, Calm, has expanded its offerings to include physical wellness with the introduction of “Daily Move,” a new series of short-form exercise videos. This feature is designed to guide users through uncomplicated exercises, encouraging regular physical activity.

The series will be updated with a new video each day within the app itself. These activities incorporate diverse movement styles, including elements of yoga, tai chi, Pilates, stretching, dance, and even simple walking routines.

Focus on Mindful Movement

Each “Daily Move” video ranges from three to five minutes in duration, allowing users to integrate them seamlessly into their daily schedules. Calm intends for this feature to help users establish consistent, healthy habits centered around physical activity.

The company emphasizes that Daily Move provides a unique form of movement, prioritizing the connection between mind and body in an accessible and consistent manner. It’s positioned as a potential starting point for individuals who find traditional meditation challenging.

A Gentle Approach to Fitness

Mads Johnsen, Chief Product Officer at Calm, explained in a statement to TechCrunch, “This isn’t about high-intensity fitness; it’s a movement offering founded on acceptance, gratitude, and self-love.”

Johnsen continued, “Our hope is that the Daily Move enables Calm members to cultivate a daily habit of enjoyable and mindful movement, ultimately enhancing their present-moment joy, achievable in just a few minutes, at any time.”

Shifting Trends in Wellness

Recent research conducted by Calm indicates a growing interest in gentler forms of exercise for mental wellbeing. The study revealed that activities like walking and stretching have seen a significant increase in participation.

Specifically, these activities are occurring two to three times more frequently than high-intensity workouts such as cardio and weight lifting.

Future Plans and Subscription Updates

Looking ahead, Johnsen stated that Calm will “continue to evaluate new product offerings,” remaining responsive to user feedback to enhance the value provided to its members.

The launch of Daily Move coincides with the introduction of a new “Premium Family” subscription plan. This plan supports up to six individual accounts.

Available globally for $99.99 annually, the family plan offers a cost-effective alternative to the individual premium plan, which is priced at $69.99 per year.

Notably, family members are not required to reside in the same household, offering flexibility not always found in similar subscription models.

Each member receives a personalized account to track progress, acknowledge achievements, and curate their preferred meditations and sleep stories.

Growth and Investment

Calm, alongside other meditation apps, has experienced substantial growth during the pandemic, attracting a larger user base.

In December 2020, the company secured $75 million in Series C funding, elevating its valuation to $2 billion.

Lightspeed Venture Partners, a previous investor, led the funding round, with participation from Insight, TPG, and Marc Benioff (CEO of Salesforce and owner of Slack), among others.
