Reliance Industries Launches Reliance Intelligence to Spearhead India's AI Development

Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries and India’s wealthiest individual, has announced a significant initiative to establish a robust AI infrastructure within the nation. This undertaking will be driven by a newly formed subsidiary, Reliance Intelligence.

Strategic Partnerships with Tech Giants

The launch, unveiled at Reliance’s 48th annual general meeting on Friday, signifies a commitment to building a national-scale AI infrastructure. This includes the development of specialized tools and services catering to diverse industry sectors. India aims to strengthen its position in the global AI landscape, currently led by the U.S. and China.

Reliance Intelligence is envisioned as a hub for top-tier researchers, engineers, designers, and product developers. The focus will be on rapidly translating research into practical innovations and applications, offering solutions for both India and the international community, according to Ambani’s keynote address.

Collaboration with Google Cloud

A key component of this strategy involves a partnership with Google. Reliance will construct a dedicated AI cloud infrastructure within India, beginning with a major data center located in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

This dedicated cloud region will empower Reliance to deliver AI-driven services to businesses of all sizes, developers, and governmental organizations. The deployment will leverage Jio’s extensive network and Reliance’s own energy resources.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, affirmed Google Cloud’s role as Reliance’s primary public cloud partner. He highlighted their collaboration on advanced AI initiatives in a video message during the AGM, stating this is merely the initial phase of their partnership.

Financial specifics of the Google partnership were not immediately disclosed.

Joint Venture with Meta

Furthermore, Reliance has established a joint venture with Meta, another significant investor, to develop and expand enterprise AI solutions for the Indian market and select international regions.

A combined investment of ₹8.55 billion (approximately $100 million) has been committed by Reliance and Meta, with a 70/30 ownership split, respectively.

The venture will provide access to Meta’s Llama-based enterprise AI platform-as-a-service. This will enable businesses to customize, deploy, and manage generative AI models for applications in areas like sales, marketing, IT, customer service, and finance. Pre-configured AI solutions will also be offered.

This collaboration follows Meta’s recent restructuring of its AI operations into Superintelligence Labs, fueled by substantial investments in AI talent. (Reports indicate a potential pause in hiring due to shareholder concerns.)

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, emphasized the practical application of Meta’s Llama models through this joint venture.

The transaction is contingent upon regulatory approvals and is anticipated to be finalized in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Expansion and IPO Plans

Reliance intends to extend its reach beyond India, bringing its flagship subsidiary, Reliance Jio Platforms, to international markets. Ambani also announced Jio’s plans to file for an initial public offering in the first half of 2026, following previous delays.

Potential Partnership with OpenAI

Discussions are reportedly underway with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, regarding a potential partnership. Details are expected to be revealed during Sam Altman’s upcoming visit to India next month, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Neither Reliance nor OpenAI have publicly commented on these discussions.

Existing Partnerships and Consumer Services

Previously, Reliance partnered with Microsoft to offer its Azure cloud platform to Indian businesses. The company also provides JioAICloud, a consumer service offering 100GB of free storage.

JioAICloud has attracted 40 million users and now includes voice search functionality and an AI Create Hub for generating AI-powered reels, collages, and promotional videos.

New Products and Integrations

Reliance showcased JioFrames, its AI-powered smart glasses, as a competitor to Snap’s Spectacles and Ray-Ban Meta glasses. Furthermore, AI is being integrated into JioHotstar, its streaming platform, which has garnered over 600 million users and 300 million paying subscribers since its February launch.

New AI features on JioHotstar include the “Riya” voice assistant and content translation into Indian languages, utilizing AI-voice cloning and lip-syncing technology.
