Apple Asks Patreon to Use External Browser for Billing

Patreon Modifies App to Meet Apple’s Requirements

The creator platform Patreon is implementing changes to its application in response to guidelines issued by Apple. These modifications stem from a recent update that initially permitted U.S. users to complete purchases through the web.

Changes to the Checkout Process

Patreon has established its own web-based checkout as the standard option for supporters located in the U.S. However, Apple has directed the company to ensure this checkout process initiates within an external browser, rather than an in-app browser.

While this adjustment introduces additional steps for patrons wishing to utilize direct Patreon payments, it allows the platform to circumvent Apple’s standard 30% commission on in-app transactions.

Background of the Update

Patreon initially rolled out the update following a court decision in the Apple-Epic legal dispute. This ruling compelled Apple to support external payment methods within apps distributed on its U.S. App Store without imposing commission fees.

Version 125.5.0 of the Patreon iOS app introduced a feature enabling users to pay via the web, accepting various payment options like credit cards, Venmo, PayPal, and Apple Pay.

Previously, this functionality operated within an in-app browser, streamlining the checkout experience. Now, following Apple’s feedback, the checkout flow redirects to a separate browser.

Expanded Payment Options for Creators

Furthermore, Patreon confirms that creators utilizing older billing structures will now also be capable of receiving payments through the Patreon iOS application.

Previously, Apple only supported subscription-based billing, mandating the exclusive use of its in-app purchase system. This restriction limited options for creators on legacy billing models, such as those employing first-of-the-month or per-creation billing, according to Patreon.

This update empowers creators to leverage these billing options on iOS, potentially significantly improving their revenue.

Membership Purchases on iOS

Within the coming week, Patreon anticipates that U.S. patrons will be able to acquire memberships from these creators at the prices established for their respective tiers within the iOS app.

It’s important to note that creators will still need to offer subscription billing to facilitate the sale of new memberships outside of the U.S.

Subscription Billing and Future Flexibility

Currently, approximately 95% of active creators are already utilizing subscription billing, which provides access to features like free trials, discounts, gifting, tier adjustments, autopilot, and more.

This change allows Patreon to address the requirements of the remaining 5% of creators.

Deadline Extension

As a result of this increased flexibility, Patreon’s previous deadline for transitioning creators to subscription billing is no longer active.

Last August, Apple had initially given Patreon a deadline of November 2025 to migrate all creators to Apple’s iOS in-app purchase system, or face potential removal from the App Store.

Patreon stated, “We’ve maintained ongoing communication with Apple and consistently advocated for a more adaptable approach—one that provides creators with greater time and choice.”

“Due to the recent ruling and changes implemented by Apple, the November 2025 deadline is no longer in effect, and currently, no new deadline has been established. This allows us to provide creators with more time and flexibility in their transition, while we concurrently address issues that have previously hindered their ability to switch,” the company explained in a blog post.
