Ridable Robot Unicorn for Kids: Chinese EV Startup's New Venture

Xpeng's Robotic Unicorn: A Rideable Mythical Creature
Forget the trend of purchasing robotic canines for children; a far more fantastical option may soon be available. Xpeng, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, has unveiled a concept for a robot unicorn designed to be ridden by children.
Leveraging AI and Autonomous Technology
As reported by SCMP, this four-legged robot will utilize Xpeng's expertise in areas like autonomous driving and artificial intelligence. This technology will enable it to traverse diverse terrains, identify objects, and offer a degree of “emotional interaction.”
Design and Size
Specific details regarding the robot unicorn remain limited. However, its design closely resembles a more approachable and child-sized iteration of Boston Dynamics’ Spot robot. Its height is intentionally calibrated to be comparable to that of a young rider.
Availability and Pricing
Currently, Xpeng has not announced a release date, pricing information, or availability details for its robotic unicorn. While it likely won’t reach the $75,000 price tag of the Spot robot, it’s anticipated to be more expensive than the 2019 Aibo, which cost $2,900.
Strategic Expansion into Robotics
Profitability isn't the primary objective with this project. Xpeng’s CEO, He Xiaopeng, stated that the unicorn represents the company’s initial foray into the robotics industry. The development leverages Xpeng’s pre-existing technological capabilities.
A Stepping Stone for Future Robots
Consider this unicorn as a foundational step. The knowledge gained from its creation could pave the way for the development of more advanced – and potentially adult-focused – robots that consumers are more likely to purchase.
