Twitter Blue Subscription: An Impending Launch

Positive developments are emerging for users who frequently make typographical errors on Twitter. The Twitter Blue subscription service, priced at $2.99 per month, is anticipated to become available to users shortly.

Initial Reports and Confirmation

Researcher Jane Manchun Wong initially reported the development of this new subscription service two weeks prior. Yesterday, the Twitter iOS App Store listing was updated to include Twitter Blue as an in-app purchase option, validating the earlier findings from this independent source.

Although subscription access isn't currently enabled, even with the latest app update, Wong has revealed details regarding the service, suggesting a near-future launch.

Beyond the undo button, which Wong discovered as early as March, the service will incorporate a reader mode. This feature transforms tweet threads into easily digestible text.

Twitter’s acquisitions of Scroll and Revue earlier this year were aimed at enhancing the user reading experience within the app, making this addition logical. Furthermore, subscribers will gain the ability to customize the Twitter app icon's color, as well as the color scheme of their Timeline – a functionality already available on the web platform.

Twitter Blue subscribers will also be able to categorize tweets into Collections. This feature functions as an enhanced version of Bookmarks, providing the capability to organize tweets within folders.

Monetization Strategies and Revenue Streams

Currently, Twitter ads generate 85% of the company’s total revenue. In February, Twitter communicated to Bloomberg its intention to explore and test new methods for platform monetization, particularly given the recent deceleration in user growth.

Over the past several months, Twitter has previewed some of its most significant platform changes since the expansion of the 140-character tweet limit in 2018. These include Super Follows, Tip Jar, Twitter Spaces, and other innovations.

During J.P. Morgan’s Global Technology, Media, and Communications conference this week, Twitter CFO Ned Segal clarified that the company considers Twitter Blue and Super Follows as distinct subscription types.

The Google Play store listing for the Twitter app displays an in-app product priced at $4.99 per item, potentially signaling the imminent release of Super Follows as well. Segal also stated that further details about the service will be disclosed in the coming months, followed by a global rollout.
