tesla has decided to sell the cheaper model y standard range after all

Tesla has begun accepting reservations for a more affordable, standard-range iteration of the Model Y, marking a shift in direction from CEO Elon Musk, who previously indicated plans for this vehicle were paused earlier in the year.

According to initial reports from Electrek, Tesla’s website has been revised to feature the Model Y standard range, with a starting price of $41,990. This represents a cost savings of almost $9,000 compared to the currently available long-range model. The Model Y standard range utilizes a rear-wheel drive system, whereas the long-range and higher-priced performance models are equipped with all-wheel drive.

This more accessible price point is accompanied by a reduced projected EPA range of 244 miles, in contrast to the 326 miles offered by the long-range version.

Tesla initially announced intentions to commence production of the standard-range Model Y in the spring of 2021. However, in July, Mr. Musk stated via social media that this variant had been removed from the website due to concerns that its range would be “unacceptably low (< 250 mile EPA).”

Tesla is also now providing a seven-seat configuration option for the Model Y, as detailed in recent updates to its online platform.
