rivian electric pickup will debut with three editions, with a cheaper one to follow

Rivian has begun accepting pre-orders for three versions of its forthcoming all-electric pickup truck and SUV, with starting prices as low as $67,500 and a driving range exceeding 300 miles. Additional models are planned, including a more affordable base configuration with a minimum range of 250 miles and a price point under $67,000.

Details regarding the three editions, their associated equipment packages, available paint colors, and pricing were revealed Wednesday on Rivian’s official website. Key announcements included the confirmation of a lower-cost base version for both the pickup and SUV, the official availability of the camp kitchen accessory, and the future offering of a battery pack providing over 400 miles of range.

Rivian, backed by investments from companies like Ford, Amazon, BlackRock funds, T. Rowe Price and Associates, and Cox Automotive, is striving to be the first to market with an electric pickup truck. However, it faces competition from established automotive manufacturers such as GM, as well as Tesla, which anticipates beginning production of its uniquely designed Cybertruck in late 2021. Ford is also preparing to launch an all-electric F-150 pickup in 2022.

The first deliveries of the Launch Edition, the initial and most expensive version of the pickup truck, are scheduled to commence in June 2021. The Launch Edition of the RT1 will have a starting price of $75,000 (prior to any applicable federal tax incentives) and will offer a range of over 300 miles with the standard battery. This edition will also feature a unique “Launch Green” paint option, exclusive badging, and the choice of either 20-inch all-terrain or 22-inch sport wheel upgrades.

The Adventure and Explore packages will also be available for both the RT1 truck and the R1S SUV. All of these versions will provide a range of more than 300 miles. The primary distinctions lie in the included features. The Launch and Adventure editions, for example, come standard with an off-road package that includes a reinforced underbody shield, dual front tow hooks, an air compressor, and interior accents in “compass yellow.” They also feature a headliner made from 100% recycled microfiber and “Chilewich floor mats.”

The various pickup truck editions are priced between $75,000 and $67,500. The R1S SUV models range in price from $77,500 to $70,000. These editions will become available at different times, spanning from June 2021 through January 2022.

Customers who place a pre-order now, requiring a $1,000 deposit, will gain access to the vehicle configurator on November 16. The configurator, which allows customers to customize their vehicle with options like paint color and equipment packages, will be available to the general public on November 23.

According to Rivian, the larger battery pack offering over 400 miles of range will initially be available for the pickup truck, beginning in January 2022. A longer-range R1S SUV, offered with both five- and seven-passenger seating configurations, will be announced after production begins, as stated on the company’s website.
