netflix says ‘the queen’s gambit’ is setting viewership records

Netflix announced today that “The Queen’s Gambit” is achieving record-breaking viewership on the platform.
Consistent with all viewership figures Netflix has shared this year, these latest statistics indicate the number of accounts that “selected to view” – meaning those that watched a minimum of two minutes of a particular program or film. Specifically, 62 million households tuned into “The Queen’s Gambit” within its initial 28 days, establishing it as Netflix’s highest-performing scripted limited series to date.
It’s important to note certain distinctions. While “The Queen’s Gambit” surpassed other limited series in popularity, such as “Godless,” also co-created by Scott Frank, it did not reach the levels of Netflix’s continuing successes, like “The Witcher” (viewed by 76 million households for its first season). Furthermore, it narrowly trailed the unscripted documentary series “Tiger King,” which attracted 64 million households in its first four weeks.
These numbers remain remarkably strong for a series centered around a seemingly unconventional subject – the story of a young woman grappling with personal difficulties as she ascends in the world of competitive chess, ultimately competing against the Soviet Union’s top champion. The show’s success is attributable to positive critical reception (achieving a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes) and its overall high quality.
The series’ influence extends beyond Netflix’s viewership statistics. The 1983 novel by Walter Tevis, which served as the source material, has re-emerged as a New York Times bestseller, and there has been a significant surge in chess set purchases.
In a blog post, Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s Vice President of Original Series, stated: “We recognized the captivating nature of ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ – Walter Tevis’ 1983 book about a gifted young chess player – three years ago when Scott Frank initially presented the adaptation idea. Beth’s journey as an underdog confronting addiction, loss, and isolation, and her ultimate triumph despite these challenges, underscores the value of resilience, the significance of family, and the importance of authenticity.”
