apple said to be planning new 14- and 16-inch macbook pros with magsafe and apple processors

According to a recent Bloomberg report, Apple is preparing to release updated MacBook Pro laptops later this year. These forthcoming models will be available in both 14-inch and 16-inch screen sizes and will feature next-generation Apple Silicon processors – building upon the advancements Apple introduced with the latest MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro released late last year. The new laptops are also anticipated to bring back Apple’s MagSafe charging connector, a dedicated magnetic power port, as an alternative to USB-C. Furthermore, there is a possibility that Apple will discontinue the Touch Bar, the narrow OLED display strip integrated into the keyboard of current MacBook Pro models.
The Bloomberg report indicates that the new MacBook Pro computers will utilize processors with an increased number of cores and enhanced graphics performance compared to the existing M1 chips found in Apple’s current laptop lineup. These new models will also incorporate displays with panels offering greater brightness and improved contrast ratios. While the overall physical design will be similar to existing notebooks, sources suggest the return of MagSafe, the magnetic charging solution Apple previously employed before transitioning to USB-C for power delivery.
MagSafe provided the benefit of easily detaching if the power cable was accidentally snagged, preventing the laptop from being pulled off a surface. It also allowed all data ports to remain available for connecting accessories. Bloomberg states that the reintroduced MagSafe for the new laptops will also support quicker charging speeds in comparison to USB-C, alongside these existing advantages.
The Touch Bar has been a subject of discussion since its introduction, with many professional users expressing dissatisfaction with the feature. They particularly miss having a row of dedicated physical keys that are beneficial for professional tasks. The report notes that Apple has “tested versions without the Touch Bar,” suggesting a potential removal of the feature, which many users would welcome.
In addition, Bloomberg reports that Apple is also developing a completely redesigned MacBook Air. Given that the MacBook Air was recently updated only a few months ago, the report suggests this new version will arrive “long after” the new MacBook Pros, making a 2021 release unlikely.
