ahead of inauguration, airbnb pledges bans for anyone involved in capitol riot

Expanding upon existing guidelines initially established following the 2017 Charlottesville demonstrations, Airbnb announced it is implementing further measures to strengthen safety and security for the Washington D.C. metropolitan region in preparation for the upcoming presidential inauguration.

The company currently prohibits individuals linked to groups promoting violence and hatred from utilizing its platform during particular events, according to a statement released by Airbnb.

Prior to the inauguration, Airbnb detailed a comprehensive, seven-phase strategy designed to prevent an influx of individuals affiliated with white supremacist, neo-Nazi, or “western chauvinist” ideologies into the DC area.

Airbnb stated it will prohibit anyone identified as participating in unlawful activities surrounding the recent events at the Capitol. “Upon receiving information from news outlets or law enforcement agencies regarding individuals confirmed to have engaged in the violent criminal acts at the United States Capitol on January 6th, we will investigate whether those individuals possess Airbnb accounts,” the company explained. “This process involves comparing names against the arrest records released by the D.C. Metro Police. Should an individual with an Airbnb account be identified, we will take appropriate action, including permanently banning them from the platform.”

This action supplements an additional review of current reservations near the Capitol building in the days preceding the inauguration to prevent any individuals connected to hate groups from circumventing security protocols.

The company is also reinforcing its booking procedures, incorporating enhanced identity verification processes and additional security protocols to guarantee the accuracy and currency of background checks.

As a concluding measure, Airbnb is directly informing guests making reservations that bringing individuals associated with hate groups could result in legal repercussions from the company. Hosts are also being advised to report any concerns regarding guests to Airbnb’s dedicated Urgent Safety Line.
